I'm currently working on yet more redesigns for Violet for something more practical that remains stylish, and I decided to check back through some of the older images of her. I must say it's impressive how much her design's actually changed over the last 4 years.
December '04:
I believe this was the first ever drawing I did of Violet. Or it was the remake, I can't remember.
I wanted to make a dangerous rival for Felicia (White Shadow) who could easily match her move for move, and specialised in knives and blades.
Her original design was... interesting... *ahem* but not terribly strong or even remotely practical. Those bangles and such can't be good for mobility or stealth due to their weight and the jangling they'd make.
June '06:
This design held for a long while. She wore a one-piece dress, vaguely chinese styled. Her bell was also given much more importance as an item. At this point, she still hadn't gained her full name, so didn't have the dual blades.
April '07:
The third redesign and the longest lasting one.
I'd reworked her hair so it points downward more and had a fringe that falls over her face. I felt it added more to her sinister side. A sash was added around her waist to balance the design a bit more since it looked bare around the torso, and I finally gave her somewhere to hold those knives in the form of the leg holsters. The tails on the dress were also shortened for ease of movement, and she gained the bracers on her arms and legs. I also dropped the number of earings from 4 to 2.
During the redesign phase before this sketch, I'd decided that she should wield dual ninja-to katanas, making her more of a threat and a more logical match for Felicia as a rival. She remained a blade and throwing knives specialist.
The finished image was named Violet Blades, and while this wasn't intended to be her title it seemed to stick. At this point she gained her full title of The Violet Blade.
August '08:
More up-to-date sketches of her done during the recent sketch dumps. Not much had changed here, but I believe my anatomy had improved somewhat. At this point I'd also started getting a far better idea of her personal history, who she is, and why she's that way. By this point the bell around her neck was given the official name of the Devil's Bell thanks to ~Caine187.
December '08:
So began the current redesign phase. Essentially, Violet is a ninja, and one that sees a whole lot of combat. As such, it makes sense for her to have more ninja elements to her design such as the forearm and shin armour. Consider this a transit phase to the most recent design changes. At this point the dress still has the previous design, though I was thinking up some more practical things for her such as leggings.
January '09:
And here's Violet's outfit design, in part, how it stands today. Her dress was completely revisited with the whole form being reworked into something generally more practical for movement and stealth, but maintaining an interesting design.
The dress itself has something of a blade motíf within the tails, chest and open back. The back of the dress was split to allow for freedom for movement for her tail, which is something I'm glad I realised as I was thinking of losing the back end of it altogether.
I gave her arm wraps and leggings to cover more of her body and give a slightly different look than before. The leggings also eliminate any possible pantyshots which is something I'd been a little concerned about for quite a while. All that leaping around she does is going to produce a few eventually. Also, as she has fairly light coloured fur it made sense to cover much of it to lower her visual profile in the dark, but at the same time I wanted to keep certain stylisation and familiarity in her design from the previous ones.
The bracers and armour pads are still in place, just not pictured here. Everything else is still being worked into, such as exactly where and how all of her weapons are stored/concealed, and how the whole outfit goes together. A complete breakbown, basically.
I'm really enjoying her current redesign phase, and as I said; it's interesting to see how much she's changed since I first came up with her back in 2004. I've already got most of the colour scheme worked out so it'll be nice when I can get around to painting up a finished version of her to show :)
I'm also going to be reworking Felicia's designs (part of which is seen in sketch dump 8) so that hers is up to date. Full breakdown and all.
Anywho, that's that for now. She'll probably have the next White Shadow sketch dump to herself since there's a lot to show.
This was a long-ass comment.
Peace out!

She does, but I hadn't drawn them in that sketch. I'm doing quite a few like it to show where everything is so the holsters are different sketches that show how they look. I'm also trying to work out exactly how the pouch and blades attach behind her, which as I found today isn't quite as simple as I'd first though due to how I need it all to work.
each and every version of her look has things i like about... the first with the bangles shows that she is quite confident in her abilities to the point that its like " so what i make noise but its not like you'll be able to stop me"
this concept is also the same for the bell...from april 07 to december 08 the design remains relatively similar its flashy mobile and rather un protective... the most recent of her looks as tho it would be more comfy but also not very protective

The version (or sections of) that I've posted up here aren't really complete, so the gauntlets from december '08 are missing here. I'm intending for this version of her outfit to be the most practical and protective of all of them without losing the style she's had all these years.
Actually reading over this comment sparked an idea about her bell, so thanks for that :)
