a really old comic page I tried to do to practice using the Manga Studio tools.... I don't really like how the toner shading works.

So looking at it, you made a tone layer and then adjusted the layer's opacity. This made the tones themselves gray, instead of being flat black and white like they're intended to be.
If you take a new layer, and then in the Layer Property panel,

You can click the checkerboard icon to convert it to a tone layer
From there, the relative brightness of whatever color you put down will be reflected in the density of the tone pattern, and may give you the effect you're looking for.
If you've got any questions about Manga Studio5 / CSP, please do let me know.
The artwork looks lovely by the way.

Thanks,
I've been using MS5 for a while now to do all my drawings for the past year or so, but I've barely touched on the tools for actually making manga comic pages.
After my first experiment with the tones, I ended up creating several tone layers for each shade I wanted,

So I filled each object with the tone I wanted, then used a soft eraser to lightly remove some of the tone to create the desired depth and shading. It was crude and I knew there was probably a better way to go about doing it, so I decided not to make more pages using that method.
Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to ask you next time I get stuck trying my hand at doing something like this.
