I think it was quiet a good decision not to draw a background. Like your have said...it makes the stallion standing out way more than he would otherwise I think.

Did you use a ref for this one or was it out of your mind?

As if I could draw this from my mind!!?! I referenced a photo, as usual. I'm not quite confident enough with horse muscle-structures to draw stuff like this without any reference.

There will be the time when you will be able to draw horses without a ref. And That time isn't that far ahead I guess.

both, actually. that's funny, I actually got a mental image of a storm even before I read the description.

I'm so pleased!!! I really wanted to do the whole thing with storm clouds and dusty ground, but on hindsight I'm glad I didn't. Perhaps someday... ^_^

I agree. Plus the white contrasting on the black just looks damn cool, and the clouds would probably take away from that somewhat.

That was my reasoning too, hence no background. ^_^

The mane and tail are to die for, and the shading is virtually flawless. Superb work, I wish I had the patience to draw that good^^

Patience is certainly not one of my virtues, but every so often I force myself to stay still and concentrate on the drawing. I love the mane and the tail too, it's a shame that the scanner doesn't show all the shades of grey I put in there. Hardly any of it is actually white. ^_^

I find the most difficult horse pose to draw to be when a horse is looking directly at the viewer. I can never quite get the head right, and in fact I think this picture could be a lot better too. But the head aside, I love the rest of it, especially the mane and the tail. Sometimes things just click. I spent the whole of yesterday at work thinking about this picture, planning it and imagining what it might look like and I couldn't wait for the day to end so that I could grab my pencils and get to work. I love feeling like that.
