Oh man so! if you follow my personal twitter youve probably seen this lil guy !
i cant beleive i havent posted him here yet but!
this is the boots!
I was at walmart and like almost ever time i go there, i was looking at the fish because even tho they are grossly neglected i really love fish? (and was somewhat on the lookout for a betta)
and i saw this poor little guy swimming along! his tankmates bit off his whole tail :C
I begged my wife to let me have him and she said nooo of course but, in the checkout line before we left i started... actually crying so she caved and my sister got him for me since i had no money on me atm
hes in a 10gal right now but once he starts healing up more and can swim without issues ill be getting something bigger + some friends!
hes surprisingly good at swimming, and its really fun to watch his progress! the first few days i brought him home he mostly sat at the bottom of his tank, but now he can swim around fine and can actually move pretty dang fast!
*reminder to anyone reading this that fancy goldfish need at least 20gal per fish, bowls are not okay for them! (or any fish!)

rescue stories are fine but if your going to talk about how your fish died because you neglected them (on purpose or not) im just going to block you

similar to how mammals breathe out carbon dioxide as a waste product, fish produce ammonia, and in a bowl it builds up very very fast and will quickly kill a fish.
with bettas, the water in a bowl would need to be changed daily to keep the ammonia levels down. with goldfish... it wouldnt even be possible, these guys are little waste monsters!
to keep ammonia down you have to cycle a tank, which i wont go into, but you need a filter for it and you cant safely filter a bowl due to size and shape!
on top of that, goldfish get fricken big.
fancy goldfish get to be about 8 inches long and common(feeder) goldfish can get between 10-12 inches long! staying small in a bowl(or tiny tank) is simply because they have no room to grow, so they stunt and die sooner. goldfish should live at least 10 years in proper care, if not 20!
AAAND for bettas, they need heaters because they are from thailand which is hoooot, and you cant safely heat a bowl. its to small so it would heat unevenly and be to hot :<
20gallons per fancy goldfish allows adequate room to swim and grow, and with proper filtration makes waterchanges less frequent. ppl thank that since goldfish are so easy to come across(pet stores, walmart, carnivals, ect) they have easy care or dont live long but that aint tru!
with bettas, 2.5gal is the bare minimum to give them a space big enough to swim and be heater properly(but personally i prefer 5gal+ for bettas). the myth that bettas like small spaces is because they get stressed out in OPEN spaces. they can be very happy in very large tanks as long as they have plenty of places to hide!
AND OF COURSE this applies for all fish(bettas and goldies are just most common)
every tank needs a filter, and a lot of fish come from warmer climates than ppl think so heaters are important. and you always gotta remember that a lot of fish are social and need pairs or schools so that means you need a bigger tank!
