It appears to be based off of men's kimono, so I'm guessing male. It is a pretty cool design, and extremely mysterious.

This just popped into my head and I had to go back and re read the first 8 pages but now its stuck in my head...

I'm imagining him having the voice of Tim Curry and that mental image is not going away...I don't know why.

Might I recommend that you name the character 'Sutoritera'? You may also consider 'Kataribe' and 'Goribu.' According to the web sources I've found, they seem to be the Japanese words for 'Storyteller'.
