I believe it was Stanislaus Lem who wrote in a tale a few decades ago in "The Space Diaries" of a space traveler who visited a planet which had "Organic" technology. The Traveler mentioned he rather liked the lamp on top of the desk because it shed good light, though it had to crawl off every once in awhile to relieve itself.
