Part 9.
Pierre:
My insufferable sisters came downstairs for dinner and seemed determined to be polite, at least at first.
Baltasar was not in evidence, as we didn’t want a replay of the high points of the Spanish-American War over dinner. With cream tarts for dessert, it would have been a real Max Fennec production.
My ears perked as Louise was asked by Mrs. de Ciervos about the grounds of the estate.
“Oh yes!” she said. “The woods are not as extensive as they used to be – I can still recall Grandfather organizing deer hunts in the winter.”
Conversation stopped dead.
Everywhere.
Senora de Ciervos considered my middle sister’s words, then raised her glass of wine and said, “Bueno. I am sure he collected many trophies – but none as lovely as my darling Inocenta. She surely show you your place in the scheme of things, yes?”
Louise’s ears went straight back and it was with difficulty that she kept herself from cresting.
I resolved to have a word with her in private.
Tomorrow morning, when I’m not so angry.
Catherine turned to Inocenta and asked, “Won’t you try a little taste of meat, Inocenta? After all, your child must grow up big and strong.”
My niece-in-law grinned. “Oh, Inocenta want the strong, manly puppy-fawn like the father." Sotto voce she added, “So they make kick under you tail." A bit louder she said, “Perhaps I bite one of your sons – that show she taste meat, yes?"
***
Les:
It took me rather longer than I think was really comfortable to consider talking her out of it. For a fleeting moment, it sounded like a good idea.
The look on Aunt Cathy’s face was worth it.
After dinner my aunts headed upstairs, Aunt Catherine complaining that she needed her nurse to give her a shot.
Shot of brandy, most likely.
Aunt Marie simply glowered at me.
I’m sometimes not the sharpest tack on the bulletin board, but I know a declaration of war when I see one. However, they’ll likely come after Inocenta instead of me.
“Por que, Leslie-puppy?” Inocenta asked after I explained my feelings to her.
“Because they know I’m going to inherit the company when Uncle Pete retires,” I told her. “I could cut them all off.”
My wife brightened. "Ay mi! Cut off? Is wonderful! I get Papi to send sword cane, yes? Where you cut?"
Again, for a moment it sounded like a good idea.

Inocenta:
Finally, it is the day of wedding! It dawn the very nice weather and Inocenta wake up her darling Leslie-puppy.
The slow way, yes?
Leslie-puppy look the tired as Inocenta have the muy fine breakfast with him, then she help him into the suit of morning and blow the kisses at him as he and his Tio Pierre go to the chapel. Inocenta have time in order to get the ready.
After all, it is the bride who is the center of the attention.
Even if it’s the second wedding, no?
Tia Toni meet Inocenta as she is being helped with her dress by Ellen, the very fine ladies’ maid. She the beaver, like Reggie-buck’s valet Senor Lodge, and she the very good person. Inocenta like her very much.
Leslie-puppy’s – pouf! – aunts come down the stairs, and they are all dressed very nice for the wedding. Caterina look the bitter, while Luisa and Maria merely look the sour.
Inocenta think they should not the grapefruit having for the breakfast.
Mami and Tia Toni are with Inocenta, and we all chat a while. There is mucho time.
Finally it is time, and Senor Newfield help Inocenta into the Rolls-Royce automobile. The drive to the chapel seem the very short, but there is a lot of people waiting.
***
Les:
Where is she?
I’ve been married before – to her, thank you – on Spontoon, but the wait still seems to go on forever. So here I stand in full formals with Uncle Pierre beside me.
Waiting.
Uncle Pierre’s talking with Don Carlos, who is dressed again with his mantle of the Knights of Saint James over his suit. He’s been talking about his new job running the radio orchestra over on Spontoon, and the conversation drifted into the situation in Spain.
“Well, our family’s had experience with that before, you know,” my uncle said.
“Si?”
“Oh yes. The first duCleds left France when the Revolution broke out.”
“Ah,” Don Carlos said, nodding. His traditional Castilian mustache quivered. “Do you think, perhaps, that the Revolution was a bad thing?”
Uncle Pierre smiled. “Well, considering how the family ended up, I think it’s too early to tell just yet.”
Don Carlos rolled this over in his head for a moment, then burst out laughing. The two of them seemed to be getting along, so I made the rounds to greet some of the guests.
A Society wedding this surely was. The Wentworths were there, from Mom’s side of the family, as were the Carsons (very big in banking) and the Steeles (pharmaceuticals). They were all very gracious and complimented me on my marriage. The Steeles, particularly, seemed very pleased with me.
It may have been because they were whitetail deer.
Congressman McKinson and his wife were present as well.
Finally the local pastor, Mr. Davis, came up and asked me to take my place as the bridal party was approaching. I nodded at the squirrel and took my place next to Uncle Pierre up at the front.
Papi went to the front door, and I heard a muffled exclamation in Spanish. I think he liked how his daughter was dressed, but with the doors closing I couldn’t see.
The chapel was fitted with an organ about twenty years ago, and the old traditional started up.
***
Pierre:
Gad, Leslie had himself a great catch.
My wife Toni, as matron of honor, came in first, grinning from ear to ear and her striped tail almost getting out of paw. She was in a creamy beige satin gown and she winked at me.
Inocenta was dressed almost, but not quite, the same – beige silk, lots of ruffles and a thin veil.
Pastor Davis started going through the ceremony, Don Carlos gave the bride away (looking a bit misty-eyed, at that), and finally:
“If there is any one among you who know just cause why these two may not be joined in wedlock, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”
I immediately turned and stared directly at my sisters.
They kept their mouths shut. Very wise of them.
It all went very smoothly after that, with the exchange of vows and so forth. Leslie responded like a champ, and there was applause as Davis proclaimed them.
Toni and I linked arms and grinned at each other as we followed the happy couple down the aisle.
“Stop right there!”
