After maaany months of work, I'm finally ready to show some WIPs of this...! :D
Same stage as the previous image (foamwork almpst done), but with the red-to-yellow ombre wig, and a mockup ear (I'm still building the real ones!)
[Following is the dame desc as the previous WIP image; repeating the info for those who haven't read it yet!]
This is the costume version I am making of
egypturnash's slinky black dragon-self, Peganthyrus! I'm not sure whether I should call it a "fursuit" or not, considering it's not going to have any fur. :P
The basic design concept is very similar to my also-furless bird costumes (Turbine Divinity, Phoenix and Vulture):
-The head sits on top of the wearer's head, sort of like a helmet, and is held in place securely by several straps.
-It has SUPERB vision and venthilation: mostly though the neck, but also through hidden vents in the cheeks and optionally through the pupils (depending on how low it's positioned, it can be worn several different ways)
-It is all-foam construction and extremely lightweight: at the moment (sans wig, electronics and skin fabric) it only weighs about 2lbs.!!
-I use NO glue and NO hard materials of any kind (resin/plastic/etc.), aside from the minimum needed for lights/wiring! his means it is not only extremely flexible, it shoud also be incredibly durable, and comfortable to wear and dance in, even for long periods of time!
-There Will Be Lights, because of course there will. XD ELwire on the eyes, and arduino-controlled LEDs on the head spikes. <3 Teasers coming soon~
Peggy's a smooth-skinned matte-black dragon, so she'll have black spandex as her 'skin,' as well as for fully lining the inside of the head for comfort and easier cleaning. And unlike with fursuit foamwork, there's no layer of fluff to hide any foam errors, so the shapes needed to be as clean and precise as possible! A challenge, to be sure.
I also spent a LONG time planning and doing R&D before I actually started building, something I didn't do enough of with the birds, which I just kind of dove into. But I built on what I learned from the birds, and took it a step further by carefully engineering every last piece. It's REALLY paid off; I am very proud of myself, and SO happy with the results so far! :D
Look for her at FC next weekend! I most likely won't be making it to to the con myself (bit sad to miss her maiden voyage!) but
egypturnash will be, at a dealer's table by day and most likely tearing up the dance floor by night! :)
(Eventually, I will also be making wings and a tail to go with the head, but those will probably NOT be done for a few more months, at least!)
