The man-machine interface of the Illusions are much more complicated really, they involve nanomachines, And they augment the pilot as well.
They can be toned down depending on the mech since the danger to the pilot becomes more evident, but comes with rewards.
And I just wished OGs for PS2 came to the US... ;3;

Well, most of the mech pilots (and fighter pilots as well) are cyborgs anyway. When they piloting their machine they pretty much become one with it, and their bodies are augmented to make them more resistant to the physical stress connected with piloting things like fighters and mechs. However, the damage dealt to their machines isn't projected on them. Now some of the experimental units utilising the "Lost" technology of the Ancients.. >.>
Well, the technology they use for those implants is so honed that there are virtually no risks involved any more. And it really is more efficient, as a pilot has only to "hop in and plug in". Of course, it requires some calibration to make a mech synchronize with the pilot, and some training too, so the pilot won't be overwhelmed by all the data coming from the mech's sensors (here I use "mech" to describe any machine controlled that way, from heavy powered armour to a strider unit to a tank or a fighter plane).
