It's standard, thinly-lacquered alder wood. You can paint on them like any other wood surface. If you need a texture to work with, a quick wipe-down with thinner or stripper to get to a clean wood surface is all it'd take.
Just be advised that the parts the laser has cut away are uncoated so will soak paints/glazes up much more readily than the uncut portions.
