Cavalina leaned Hir cheek against the palm of Hir hand, elbow propped up on the sill of the carriage’s window as it trundled along the road. The eternal autumn-hued leafs, shimmering golds, reds, and orange of sun’s flame, rolled by as the carriage passed through the wooded vale. Shi sighed, the hints of a smile edging at the corners of Hir mouth as Shi kept watch on the passing tress, a gentle breeze playing across Hir skin. Cavalina hardly stirred from Hir reverie when Hir companion in the carriage reaching over and brushing Hir bangs out of Hir face, “Your hair looks like it needs a trim, Cavalina.”
Cavalina blinked a bit but didn’t really acknowledge the statement with little more than a half-thought about, “Huh?”
“Cavalina, whatever has you so distracted?”
“Right, hair getting’ long. Not to worry, Mam,” Cavalina responded, the words rolling off Hir tongue in a sing-song lilt, still staring out the window of the carriage and bracing Hirself a bit as they rolled over a bump in the road.
Estel loudly cleared her throat, sitting back in her own seat across from her daughter and shooting a very stern gaze at Cavalina, “I do not know where or when you picked up that atrocious accent Cavalina, but you certainly should not use it while you are home. Your mother would have an absolute fit.”
The admonishment finally stirred Cavalina from Hir thoughts and Hir cheeks quickly flushed. Sitting back from the window of the carriage Cavalina carefully smoothed out Hir traveling dress and folded Hir hands in Hir lap. Lightly wetting Hir lips with Hir tongue Shi closed Hir eyes for a moment to compose Hirself and after taking a deep breath spoke again, being sure to properly accentuate each word with the formal pronunciation, “My apologies, Mama. I will be certain to conform to the Court’s etiquette while I am visiting and will do My best not to use such a baseless tongue in the presence of company. I would hate to be an embarrassment for mother at such an important occasion.” The formal smile that Cavalina brought to Hir lips was quickly turned into a genuine one by the smirk Hir statement brought to Hir mother’s face, the elven noble’s icy blue gaze betraying the warmth brought to her heart by the response.
“See that you do. We have missed you Cavalina, your sisters have been clamoring for weeks about your return, and you simply must visit us more often. I know your studies in Dalaran are important, but… well there is only so much a human can teach an elf about magic,” Estel’s disdain for the shorter lived race was not something she was one to hide. Not outwardly hateful of the humans, she certainly had a bias toward the more elegant and graceful form of spellcasting that was the elven tradition. Both elves glanced out the windows again, watching as over the course of an afternoon the wooded trees slowly gave way to the rolling farmlands and outlying villages that dotted around the city and finally gave way to the outskirts of the capital.
Estel stretched her hands over her head and arched her back with a sigh, “It will be good to get out of the carriage finally, I can appreciate the journey but the actual riding leaves me tired for weeks.” Cavalina simply nodded in response, Shi didn’t mind the carriage ride as much as Hir mother, preferring it to the jarring experience of teleporting via magic, and it had provided plenty of bonding time with Estel, still Cavalina sighed and looked out the window once more. “Oh, there is no need for such thematic displays, Cavalina. We shall be home soon and then you can see everyone again, young Lady Brightheart has been asking about you, she has been spending many an afternoon around the estate preparing for your return.”
“Lyshara’s been…?” Cavalina found Hirself slipping back into the smoky subtleties of the regional dialect and looked to Hir mother with a note of confusion on Hir face. “But I thought she was angry at Me. We’ve nary spoken since she last visited,” Cavalina eyebrows quirked as Shi looked to Hir mother for clarification.
Estel held up her hand, quietly dipping her head in a soft nod before opening her shimmering eyes to look upon her daughter once more, “I know nothing of that, Cavalina but if you and Lyshara have been quarelling you will need to sort that out between yourselves. That facet aside, Lady Brightheart seems to be quite beside herself over your return, so I would not worry too much…” Estel smiled softly at her daughter and raised her own eyebrow, her upturned lips indicating that she knew more than she was letting on, but as was the way of a noble of court, she was perfectly willing to let Cavalina learn the lesson and material all be Hirself. The pair continued their ride in silence, arriving at the Dawnwalker Estate as the sun began to set, just in time to miss evening prayers, as if Estel had planned it as such.
Dinner was the usual barrage of questions: How were Hir studies? (They were going well.) How long would Shi be staying this time? (Shi planned on staying at least two weeks, maybe more.) What is it like in Dalaran? (Sunny, the weather was controlled by the Kirin Tor but nowhere near as sophisticated as the Quel’dorei’s magics.) Are there other elves there? (Yes, some but Shi’d rather not talk about them.) What are they like? (I’m not setting you up on any dates Amythyst.) What is the night life like? (A variety of taverns and bards, but much of the citizens didn’t really go out much.) Did Shi need another tutor? (Another tutor wouldn’t be necessary.) Was Shi actually studying with this tutor or had it moved to something else? (Mother! How could you even ask that…) Could one of Hir sisters come visit? And so on…
The dinner was exhausting but it felt good to be surrounded by family once more. Amythyst, Lissarris, and Jasiani all excused themselves early for one reason or another, leaving Cavalina to finish the meal with Hir mothers. The conversation was light, but thoughtful, Cavalina filling in many details of Hir studies in Dalaran and also learning more of Sapphire Dawnwalker’s promotion within the Sisterhood of the Sun. Talk turned to what Cavalina’s duties would be at Hir mother’s ceremony and Shi listened intently, as heir it was Hir duty to put on a good show for the other noble houses as well as to be beacon for the future of Hir House. As the candles began to dwindle, Cavalina excused Hirself before pushing Hir chair back from the table and standing to await acknowledgement from Sapphire. Receiving a smile and nod from Hir mothers, Cavalina curtsied and went to kiss the cheek of each in turn before exiting the dining hall.
Cavalina gripped the front of Hir dress’ skirt in two hands and began to ascend the stairway leading to the family bedchambers. Giggling from down the hall drew Hir attention, Hir ears perking and flexing to attempt to make out what was being said, and as Shi rounded a corner Cavalina found Hir three sisters standing together in a clump. Not wishing to interrupt their gossiping but no more willing to surprise the three, Cavalina coughed softly to announce Hir presence and then began to walk with a bit more purpose, letting the echo of Hir heels tap along the wooden floor as Shi approached. The three turned to face Cavalina, Amythyst grinning from ear to ear and waving, while Lissarris had a small smirk and seemed to squirm a bit in her dress, Jasinai being the most practical of the bunch folded her hands delicately and waited, “Hello dear sister, welcome home.”
Cavalina smiled brighter, drawing Hir sisters into a big hug before kissing each tenderly and draping Hir arms over Jasinai and Amythyst’s shoulders while Lissarris crossed her arms at the gesture. “Oh don’t be such a grump, Lissarris, I know you hate dresses as much as I, but they please Mam,” Cavalina smirked, tossing Hir youngest sister a wink.
“It’s not that, Cava! Lissarris wanted to go on a date tonight but Mama forbid it since you were getting home, so she’s feeling a bit… blocked…” Amythyst tossed the youngest Dawnwalker a cheeky grin before leaning heavily upon Cavalina.
“I know a thing or two about being blocked, careful she doesn’t take it out on you Amythyst,” Cavalina smirked, coming to Hir sister’s defense but then gave them all hugs again before planting Hir hands upon Hir hips, “Now then, what are the lot of you doing here giggling outside My room?”
Jasinai, Lissarris, and Amythyst all exchanged glances, a secret unspoken between the three before they all smiled in unison and turned to look at Jasinai who nodded, taking the responsibility to notify Cavalina upon herself. Jasinai stepped forward, kissing Cavalina’s forehead and whispered, “See for yourself, Cava.” Stepping back from the embrace, Jasinai leaned past her older twin and opened the door, Amythyst and Lissarris practically pushing Cavalina inside before the three closed the door behind Hir, giggling the whole time.
It took Cavalina a moment to reorient Hirself, terribly confused by the turn of events in the hallway before Hir attention was drawn to the figure in the room wearing little more than a nightgown, “Cavie?” Cavalina turned at once, recognizing the voice and stepping over to embrace Lyshara. The pair shared a soft, tender, and all too short kiss before Lyshara placed a hand on Cavalina’s chest and softly pushed Hir away. Cavalina’s face once more drew a blank of confusion as Lyshara took a step back, her eyes shimmering with what Cavalina took for sadness. Cavalina’s heart began to sink as Lyshara spoke once more, “I have something to tell you…” and Lyshara untied the nightgown, letting the sash fall to the ground as she cupped her hands under her stomach… and the just now noticeable bump beginning to develop.
I've actually been sitting on this one for a while, just waiting for inspiration to strike Me for writing a story. Here we have the four Dawnwalker sisters. From left to right: Lissarris (the youngest), the twins Jasinai & Cavalina, and Amythyst.
