The Gelgoog was the last of the Principality of Zeon's mass-produced mobile suits in the One Year War, but the first to use beam weaponry. Due to the Gelgoog being developed late into the war, it is said that 67 units took part in the Battle of A Baoa Qu, piloted by rookies due to the fact that most of Zeon's more skilled pilots were killed in earlier battles. It is said that if the Gelgoog was pushed into development at least two weeks earlier, the tide of the war would be on Zeon's favor. Char Aznable, the Red Comet, would pilot a Commander's Model in his standard colors.

After the war, the Gelgoog would be used by the Earth Federation Forces as high-performance aggressor training units. The Gelgoog would later be seen in Zeta Gundam used by the AEUG (using the frame of a Nemo), ZZ Gundam used by the African Liberation Front, and Gundam Unicorn as a mobile suit used by The Sleeves.
