The Beatrix Potter tales are real, and were important in the lives of Edwardian children throughout the English-speaking world. By my day, the 1950s, they were still well known but not so pervasive. I had a china pabulum dish as a babe that had Beatrix Potter characters painted on it. As far as I recall Walt has imitated the style well in the Mrs. Rabbit one. The Nick Badger story is something else, though... Google Beatrix potter for more.
I never actually read them, I don't think. Although I have a dim nagging memory that they may have been brought up in kindergarten. Despite turning out quite bookish, my upbringing was anything but. My mother taught me to read early, but we read the newspaper strips. I think we may have been too poor to have many books, and we were often nowhere near a library. I onl really started to become aware of the possibilities after I was ten.
