He never asked for any of this. To be here, fighting a new horde every corner he turns. At the beginning of this, even before the reapers, it was all to keep his family safe. To give the ones who took him in, raised him as one of their own flesh and blood and loved him for who he was, a chance to live without a war torn life. Anything that didn’t mean you had to put on spit shined boots, endure whatever painful task they order you to do until you puke whilst they constantly reminded you how much of a pathetic pile of shit you are. All of this just to prepare you for war.
He thought he could try to just disappear into the crowd. Do his time in the military and go home but no matter what he did he always stood out. Whether it was because he was an outcast or showed potential to be something more. One saw he was a fighter and took advantage of that, helping him through his training to make him a survivor. Ian is always conflicted whether he should be grateful for what he did or despise him for what he made him into.
After all he’s been through, what the Hierarchy done to him that managed to break his chains from them, he thought he was free from living that life. However, once your name is on those dog tags you can never escape the call of duty.
So here he is. Fighting against the reapers to save whatever is left of the galaxy. At the start he thought to himself why he is back here in this hell and then almost immediately remembers why. He’s doing this for them, those who he has loved and still does throughout his life. Moreover, he doing it for those who just simply cannot. He picks up the gun so they don’t have to. He risks his life so theirs will be safe. He faces whatever monstrosities the Reapers throw at him so that they will not have to face the horrors. In the end if he can save lives in colonies, cities, planets or here on the scorched battlefield then he will don his armour, load his rifle and charge into the firefight. If they are safe, then he will regret nothing.
