While I don't claim to be an expert in canine anatomy, and know that there are others out there who could do a far better job at rendering it than me, I felt this had to be done. I've seen artists on art sites -- even "popular" ones -- draw an animal that is supposed to be a "wolf" but in fact looks more like some sort of husky-fox hybrid or somesort. So here, for your viewing pleasure (and drawing reference) is a comparison of the three types of wild canid I see most often represented on art sites -- the wolf, coyote, and red fox -- in feral form, and their comparitive anatomy.
Please note: none of these animals is to scale. While the coyote and fox are close, the wolf by all rights should be about 2.5-3x larger than he is. Just a heads up.
Tell me what you think, and if you found this useful.

This is a very handy reference to have, a lot of people mess the proportions and the shape up quuuiiite a bit in the fandom. Especially with foxes. Although admittedly most of the anatomical mishaps with foxes with furries tend to be how much of their internal workings are taken up by an impossibly long colon... ANYWAY! Nice job x3
I know! And to be honest I'm getting tired of it. I'm not saying everyone has to be perfect -- heck, I can look at this and name several mistakes right off the top. But part of art is progressing. It's continually improving yourself. And if you're not willing to do that ... why bother doing art at all?
That's true, and I totally understand. People do the same thing to humans and humanoids -- one that pops right to mind is
kingcheetah I suppose my point isn't that I see a lot of people drawing "wolves" that look much more like large Papillons or (Long-Haired) Chihuahuas. Some don't even look canine. Not all of them, I'm sure, are doing it on purpose. It was supposed to be a quick reference tool for those who aren't, and who are striving for a more realistic look, even if it is slightly toony.
