Quite a few usually! Just about anything you see is on a separate layer. Like the foreground grass, midground grass, background grass, character and its various line/shadow/color layers, foreground leaves, background leaves, etc + all the layers used to achieve the lighting effects. It can end up pushing sai to its memory limits sometimes depending on canvas size!

Would you consider doing a coloring tutorial sometime?
