"Oh come on, Syn look around you. There are thousands of people here and none of them are paying any attention!" Xander wove his way through the crowd, cubs all in tow.
"Yeah Syn, hurry up!" Maakus waved back at him from the dragon's perch atop Xander's shoulders.
"Hey! Not so fast!" The fox chewed his lip and flattened his ears against his head. He had to hurry to keep up and maintain a hold on the green puma's tail but it seemed like the diapers Xander had insisted they all wear were so loud nobody could help but see them. In his head he knew that was ridiculous and that Xander was right, but his heart was still pounding with nerves. Still, Xander had offered to take them all out for new years, and that was the deal. And he had been right, too. Syn looked around but couldn't see any bathrooms at all through the crowds packing the park.
Up ahead Syn could see Xander disappearing into the press of furs with his friend Landis in tow. The purple cat had a hold of Xander's left hand and was practically pulling them all ahead. Tauvix the tiger had Xander's right and seemed to be determined to clear a path to the clearing where they would have the best view of the show.
"OK, wait for me!" Syn nearly lost his grip on Xander's tail, then screwed up his courage, fixed his grip, and charged ahead to keep up.
True to Xander's word nobody said anything about the constant crinkle that had seemed so loud to Syn's sharp ears and they were there before any of the cubs knew it. Xander waved to a couple of old army buddies who pulled open a gate labeled "no admittance" and waved them through. "Y'all are just in time, Greene. Show's about to start any second now."
Xander took a deep breath and exhaled mist. "Thanks for setting this up guys. We would have been earlier but somebody was dragging his feet." He grinned back at Syn, who blushed straight to the tops of his ears. "But... Here we are. And just in time. So let's do this."
They found a spot right up front where Syn could see the barge with the mortars floating out on the lake. The crew had set up nearby and waved to Xander and the cubs as they found their spots. The show chief, a dalmatian, called out to them as they got set up. "You ready for this? How about you kids give us a countdown?"
Landis, Maakus, Tauvix, and Syn all shouted at the top of their lungs. "Five! Four! Three! Two! One! FIRE!"
And then the sky lit up.
