Caitlyn has learned a few things since leaving her home. First, the Wasteland does not "go easy" on anyone, it is indiscriminate in its treatment of those living in it. Second, it is kill or be killed. Third, she likes rifles. And fourth is that after a while she became numb to the horrors around her.
On the positive side, that is one less (offscreen) Raider to terrorize people and another handful of ammunition for a gun she probably doesn't have. Can sell that for caps or trade it for information on where to find what she was sent topside to find.
Also floating things like that should require knowledge of Telekinesis. But apparently Confusion, Psychic and Extrasensory work just as well.
