Endless Realms bestiary - Dhampir
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The art director's husband is, I hear, a huge fan of vampires, so my assignment to make a dhampir was probably for him, heh, asking for a male dhampir with a sword. I happily obliged! I know he resembles something more from the Castlevania or Devil May Cry games, but for some reason, I kept thinking of the Vampire Nighthawk MtG card o_O Not sure why. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, although he was a jerk to work on - my laptop "randomly" (that's what I get for trying to watch Netflix at the same time as doing work) overheated and I had to paint him over again >_<

Well unlike certain other fantasy villains... This one appears to know how to keep it's blade in working order; in a sheath when not in use.
Though I can think of a few ways to take down a vampire... Throw a few blood vials on the floor so they enter a feeding frenzy; Much stronger and faster.... Less cunning so they can be lead to a trap...
Though if that doesn't work I guess the party is going to have to fight the two handed sword weilding undead bastard manually...

Heh,I think artists just tend to omit the sheaths because it's harder to have a "sheathed" and "unsheathed" version in-game than just the unsheathed one, and in art, it's not uncommon for artists to have to draw things they don't know much about XD I generally try to do at least a cursory bit of research on things before I draw them, but on the subject of swords, I remember one picture in general really bothered me: it was posted by a very skilled but very arrogant artist who prides himself on being the "lord" of his genre - he did a sexy girl posing with a katana, but she was holding it entirely wrong :S I mentioned it to him, saying it was a shame because otherwise it was quite good, and he banned me XD
Sorry, tangent :V Yeah, definitely a number of ways to deal with vampires, but as Vinchenzo mentioned, these guys aren't quite the same unfortunately! The trouble with dhampirs as an enemy is they tend to have the best of both worlds when it comes to being a vampire and a normal mortal :b

Hybrid Vampires, they are created via being born and bred, not by being created via necromancy or Vampirism.
The unique thing about Hybrid Vampires like Dhampirs is that thanks to being born from Humans, they have many bonuses, looking more human than normal Vampires, and not being effected by methods to kill and harm undead.
Dhampirs still suffer from flaws though from their human mothers... they are living creatures, and can die from many methods mortals can such as extreme temperature, blood loss, extreme injury, suffocation, etc.
Dhampirs heavily benefit from their undead fathers though. Their Vampire fathers give them the ability to drain blood and benefit from sucking blood from the living, as well as transformation powers common to vampires, and an affinity with necromancy.
Dhampirs can be either the greatest, most noble and good of humans, or the most evil and malignant of vampires, depending on how they are raised.
If you consider the Castlevania series... Dhampirs are often at conflict with their undead parent and as a result get into fights and wars at worst with them. However Dhampirs always tend to be socially awkward and viewed with suspicion by pureblood humans.
If you consider other series, Dhampirs are social outcasts of both Vampires and Humans, and often do what they can to prove themselves equal to and even at times superior to their pureblood kin, whether immortal or mortal kin.

Yeah, as I was mentioning to Arrogance, they can be tricky because they sort of have the best of both worlds from both vampires and normal mortal races, and generally seem pretty well set up for a comfortable, powerful, extended life, especially if they don't particularly care what others think of them :V
"Claymore" certainly was the word I had in mind. I played around with a more 'practical' one for a while. It was good at cutting 50 gallon drums(and zombies) and straining shoulders, but certainly didn't have a lot of glam to it. Unfit for a vampire's ornate fashion sense.
Did you happen to get any photos of your friend's sword?

I can see this guy ending up being a final boss, or an NPC that is in charge of everything that turns public opinion against the adventurers. He does give off the castlevania vibe but that's a good thing in the end. Oh maybe since he is basically a vampire he tries to convert one of the party. Party manipulation is always fun
Yes, party manipulation is ALWAYS fun :D I say that as a player, too XD Keeps you on your toes, makes things more personal. Everyone expects monsters that fight them and that they need to kill - having to deal with monsters doing other things, and in ways OTHER than just killing them... those tend to be more challenging, and therefore usually more rewarding :b
