Interestingly, in the case of Biers, my horsey artist, this would most definetly cure insomnia. In his youth, he was plagued by voices in his head, who demanded he cut himself in return for magical powers. When he tried to ignore them, they kept bothering him, messing with his sleep, until he finally made the sacrifice, gained the power and was allowed to sleep.
