Artists, don't feel guilty no matter what anyone tries to say when you get high bids for your work. If someone is paying it, that's what it's worth to them. What it's worth to anyone else isn't your concern.

I can understand both sides of the argument. The problem is the globalization of the economy - FA is a perfect example of this. My rent is 4200 a month - which means that I get paid a fuckton more than someone else too. Someone doing the same exact job as me would be making 90k a year and only be able to spare maybe 200 a month for an entertainment budget; but due to the costs of living and geographic factors, my entertainment budget - with the exact same wage adjusted for location - is 500 a month.
Now this poses an interesting situation - the folks in cheaper CoL areas literally can't afford to compete with me. But the artist might be in one of those areas, and 500 of my budget is worth a lot MORE to them than it would be if the artist were to live in my area.
Globalization bitches! It's a thing.
Artists aren't large scale enough to price things proportionately to differing regions, and even if they were, they'd find the same issue big companies have - if I can buy and import a TV for 500 bucks that would cost 1500 to buy locally, I'll just buy the damn thing in taiwan and import it.

Agreed.
I've had moments where I look at stuff and think 'shit, I can't afford that'- however, I remember someone else will, and that's okay! Means someone else is going to get a rad piece of artwork and the artist receives income for their needs.
Win some, lose some. Otherwise where's the fun in life?

Man, if ever there was a submission that needs to be seen by everyone! I've always thought that one of the strengths of this whole furry thing are the people who value artists and their work, and who understand that someone's time and hard work is worth paying for. I hope that you, and any artist who takes commissions, can look past any negativity or hostility and remember that your work is definitely worth it!
Luckily I don't think I've ever had to deal with price wank.
I see people get so pissy with bidders spending more than they think they should spend all the time and complain about what the money could be used for otherwise and blah blah blah. If someone's paying it? It's not too much. If nobody's paying it, chances are the artist will adjust their prices accordingly. When people are falling over themselves to pay for the work your complaints are kind of null.

It's actually a well-documented practice, of how to scam a corporation out of their product.
People are shameless.
And the corporations cave, because the loss of a few hundred or even few thousand dollars of product is easier to bounce back from than pissing off the wrong person, who in turn makes it their point in life to paint their brand with a bad reputation.
Now these people with all of their free products come online and say to themselves, "Well it worked in real life. Let's see if I can't scare anyone else into give me some free products."

90% of the e-mails and comments I get are "I like this but I can't afford it."
Although in my experience, "I can't afford it" means "I don't want it and want a socially appropriate excuse."
I've literally had people drop $400 a few feet away from me and then whine that MSRP is too much for a plush toy at my table.

well it's hard to think like that watching someone throw 1kPlus at a piece of a porn drawing that's already set up and you can't really throw out any way you wanna change it when you could've hired them with a commission and saved a ton more. though I'm thankful that every FA submission is no longer an YCH.
I mean damn that got overrated fast.
I mean damn that got overrated fast.
As a fellow artist, I think whoever is willing to pay that much for their art, all the power to them...
...Except when that artist strictly ONLY does YCH's. Boring! I could love their style, but I would really love it if they could draw my idea, instead of just coloring in my character into their little "ych" blank template of theirs. I have some great ideas, and I'm even willing to toss money to the point that the artist would even probably make even more off the commission than a YCH auction, but they'll lose my interest because their YCH templates will never match up with my ideas for a picture. They lost my business, not because of price, but because as a buyer I've lost any sort of creativity in the commission aside from just character design. I can't decide how they're posed, how many characters in one picture, or even what they're doing -- that's all up to the artist. YCHs are great for buyers who really have no idea what to commission, but for some of us we do.
Now if only "blank canvas do what you want with it auctions" were a thing, I'd be all over that. People still bid, buyers don't lose their "idea" power in the commission, and the artist still rakes in money. Win/Win.

Well actually you could auction off comic YCH without losing it's punch by giving a theme to the YCH comic in the description such as.
"This comic will feature _____________ as the theme and _______ many panels it has room for ______ characters, Starting bid is ___ $ starting here"
Can also change out Panels for Pages. This way the YCH winner get's surprised with the punchline but get's to at least know what his/her character get's involved in

I'll be truthful. At times when I see the bid wars going on for an adoptable that starts at $35 and it instantly sky rockets to $150 I'll shake my head and say that's nuts. But just because I'm not working and can't afford to dish out that kind of money on well done art doesn't mean others aren't able to do so. Art is like any craft that takes time and skill to get done right, a skilled artists efforts are priceless. If the piece began at $35 and instantly went to $150 then it's obviously worth the price to the fans of said artist. Now if I was working and had the extra money I would probably be bidding on a lot of these things.
This same instance goes with me buying myself a chainsaw for Xmas. Some would think I was nuts for spending $370 on a tool that makes loads of noise and drinks gas. But I see it as a potential way of eventually making some money so their opinion is canceled out. :3

^This.
It's easy math though. If you spend 12 hours on a commissioned piece and your 'customer' isn't willing to pay more than $100....you made less than 10 bucks an hour. Now, I'm not an artist, but I've got bills to pay, and less than $10 and hour? Some people I know would consider that an insult.

In some way YCH auctions are not like eBay where there have been times the seller has used a bot to jack up the price to what they want.
There are pros and cons, I have seen some good artists do YCH and they are charging very little and get nothing and I have seen a few who won't even consider the bid unless they get $350 for a slot.
Maybe it's the artist or the character they like but I would say have a serious think can you afford it or not or set a limit on how much you are willing to drop.
Has there ever been artist and a bidder who have been working together, where the artist wants a certain amount and this "bidder" bids to jack up the price and has no interest in winning?

On the 'Can you afford it?" That is not ours as the spectator nor the artist's concern, really. We don't know what kind of job someone has or how they got the money.
Using someone to jack up the price is a gamble. You'd still have to have someone who thinks it's worth it to actually get paid.

In all honesty, I can say I get a little salty when I see people drop mad duckets on art when I can't for the sake of financial responsibility. Bills and food come first. Then I remember, I'm an artist and I could just draw it myself.
It just doesn't seem fair to have to be a frugal adult and then you see people just blowing wads of cash on a piece of art. You get a little sad and eventually you swallow that sadness and move on.

I can understand why someone might become bitter in this situation. Artistic fulfillment (of the commissioner) shouldn't be based solely on affluence. However trying to deride the artist for getting more money for their work is not right. Coming to terms with this situation and transcending your own wants in support of someone else might be hard. But it's probably the best thing you can do.
Sorry I can't hear your arrogant bitching over all this MONEY!
Artist have the right to charge whatever they like for their art because its THEIR art. They are the ones that take the time and energy out of their lives to draw these things, time and energy they could have spent doing anything else. Your not buying something from an artist because their greedy jerks, your buying time out of their day. If you can't afford something then don't buy it, bitching about how expensive it is doesn't make the price go down and odds are the artist couldn't care less if you think they charge to much because they have 100 others who say different and aren't to shy with the credit cards. :P

Heh... I don't like YCH because I find it lazy on the commissioner's side (not the artist's), same for adoptables... But that's just me... But yeah, if someone wants to pay a bunch to you, more power to them... I sold an abstract painting for 750 dollars when I was young (Bought this computer with it) and I've not painted anything since... I always giggle when people think 200 dollars is a lot for artwork... When artwork can shoot up to thousands if it's worth that much to the buyer.
(Side note, this computer is like... 11 years old... I probably need to paint again... *snirk*)
