The finest school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world."
—Rubeus Hagrid praising Hogwarts.[src]
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a British wizarding boarding school teaching the magical arts, located in an unknown location in Scotland.[1] The castle is in the mountains near a loch. The precise location of the school can never be uncovered because it has been rendered Unplottable. To muggles the school looks like an old abandoned castle. Similarly, most wizarding schools locations are protected in order to prevent their ways of teaching being revealed, as well as protect the students and schools themselves from any harm. Hogwarts is more-than-likely a fantasy world of its own.
Established around the 9th or 10th century, Hogwarts is considered to be one of the finest magical institutions in the wizarding world, though other notable schools include Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the Durmstrang Institute. Children with magical abilities may be enrolled at birth, and acceptance is confirmed by owl post at age eleven. However, if the child in question is a Muggle-born, or a magical child born from non-magical folks, a professor from the school will come and inform the child's parents.
The school's motto is Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus, which, translated from Latin, means "Never tickle a sleeping dragon".

beautiful model-work. who built it?
i'm guessing either a media props and miniatures team, or less likely a museum staff team.
but i'd be curious to know, just on general principals, though i'd probably never remember their names,
who the individuals who worked on it were.
i have no doubt such places can and do exist, and require only an ability to walk the pattern,
or whatever it is that you do with the logrys, to find places hidden between parallel universes.
but i've only ever learned how to do so, when my physical body is asleep.
i remember one place i was thinking about applying to get in.
(not hogwarts, it was a different universe. similar curriculum though)
they had some classes i wanted to take.
when i got there the office was closed though, so i thought i'd wander around and see what i could see.
one of the classes was taking place outside, where they had filled the quad about four feed deep with water,
and they were teaching and practicing how to walk on it.

It was built by the props dept for the first film, and added to over the course of the films, it was 3d scanned to form the basis of the cgi backdrops etc. Took something like 60 staff 6 months to build, and is internally lit, and can be set so a light moves through as if someone was walking with a lantern through the room or corridor. It is amazing.
