Following the events of MLP : Eclipse, Sunset Shimmer found herself with no place to go. Lauren offered her a position with the newly formed Shadowbolts under Princess Luna, and she accepted. As a zebra Lauren knows all about being the outsider.
As they defend Equestria together when the sun goes down, they find they have more in common than just being former students of Celestia.

I've loved Sunset Shimmer since the moment I laid eyes on her. Plus when they mentioned she was a former student of Celestia's, it just set my imagination on fire. Her role is super critical to my story.
Needless to say when I thought of doing my own MLP spinoff, she was one of the first ponies I signed to a contract, so to speak! I kind of think that the way I'm working it blends well with the main universe, since there's a lot of ground they don't cover so I can mine all of that. :)
