As I am at constant pains to make as clear as possible, the world I'm using is derived from DMFA. Abel is a popular character that was introduced when the 'cubi academy arc, e.g. http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_507.php (He does appear briefly prior, this is essentially where he joins the regular cast)
Project Future is set around 150 years later. In DMFA proper, Jakob is actually staff at the academy, e.g. http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_1571.php
In a nutshell, Jakob's life story runs something like this. How much of that is canon in DMFA is open to debate, but it was designed to be plausible without actually touching any of the canon characters.
(Approximate)
900 years ago: Born
875 years ago: Gets headwings, ends up in the academy
500 years ago: Graduates, ends up in the city of Ha'khun, eventually becomes joint ruler with Page (See: "Turning a new Page" side-story)
During this period they obtain high technology from our Earth to try and build a utopia
400 years ago: Page is murdered, Jakob becomes sole ruler and slowly starts to go crazy
385 years ago: "Heads you Lose" side story, after that Jakob really starts to come apart and becomes obsessed with avenging Page.
100 years ago: Jakob finally avenges Page, realises that he's become a tyrant and quits the city, ashamed of what he's done. At some point after this he goes back to the Academy.
Furrae's industrial revolution is starting around this time and he is able to put his technical skills to good use as a lecturer/technician.
10-15 years ago: 'Critical Mass' and 'Dark Angel' stories take place
150 years post DMFA: Jakob has faked his death ans set up a secret research base in Furrae's Arctic. Project Future takes place.
"The Axeman Cometh" also takes place around this time, Illiath founds her own academy
175 years post DMFA: The Epsilon Project
"Dark Lord Rising" probably happens a couple of decades after Epsilon, the time hasn't been nailed down.
