Self Indulgent Scribbling: [MtG] A Kemba, Kha Regent Story
...or "Pride and Preoccuppying Thoughts"
Yeah, wrote this last week while I was sick, tossed it around and really, it is something that only a few people may get into, but, y'know, I doubt Kemba's sexuality was EVER something talked about in canon, lol, so, I think this is loose enough for me to play with
No self insertion this time, just created a Leonin for the position of the role alongside her, so, Shier, I guess I should see if I ever make art of her or not? >_> *Shrug*
For basic background info?
Mirrodin's an entirely metal world, the plants, animals, everything contains at least a partial amount of metal in their forms, and among the many races of this metal planet are the Leonin, a proud feline race, once lead by the great Raksha:

But sadly, in the fall of the plane's hienous villain Memnarch, an event occurred that made Raksha and the eldest of the planes population vanish all at once with no explanation, leaving the rest of the population in chaos deciding how to continue their lives
And so for the Leonin, Kemba stepped in, rejecting the role of Kha and insisting instead to be given her own title of 'Regent' and act as warden for the day they believe Raksha will return:

Soooooo, I rattled this out, and, it really is just self indulgent nonsense, lol, if anyone enjoys, I'll be happy at that

It pains me that there's just so little story behind her. It feels like she was designed as a filler legend when someone remembered that the leonin were a thing at the last second and the previous leader went missing. They were just too damn focused on that Phyrexian crap. All she has is three cards, a short paragraph as a background story and a shout-out from Puresteel Paladin on the now-derelict New Phyrexia spoiler page on the main website. That said, being a former skyhunter is extremely badass and she knows how to lead an army so there's that.
The worst part about paying attention to how MTG is developing as a game to the masses is that stuff like Kemba is a no-no now. Too many people complained about Mirrodin's art, Kemba being really high on that shitlist. It was HILARIOUS reading the complaint threads about Kemba on forums and Twitter though. Theros had female leonin on cards but you had to notice that the subject had no mane and then come to that conclusion yourself. 95% of the ladies now are covered head to toe (except vampires cuz vampires). In other words, R&D probably want to forget that Kemba exists. The only tiny beacon of hope is that Kemba's effect is still unique. No other card rewards you for playing equipment specifically, not even Nahiri. Maybe she's one of the few remaining Resistance legends that are still themselves. Maybe Melira found a way to break the infection. Maybe Kemba turns into a standard-staple mythic with work-safe art the next time we go back to New Phyrexia. I don't trust the people that write the story though. They messed up the BFZ storyline really bad. I've got no faith in their writing department. Odds are, she's been forgotten, she gets killed off-screen or is a mockery of her former self. The nerds will love to point out that Phyrexianization really improved the card art though.
Buff, half naked male cats are okay. Buff, half-naked "obviously female" cats, OH NO KILL IT WITH FIRE.
(if it seems like I really hate MTG, I don't. Just the storytelling. I'm really active in my community. I've had a Kemba EDH ever since she was first spoiled as a card. I'm just "passionate" about Kemba more than a normal person should be lol)
But I digress.
I enjoyed the story. It is really cute. I love how you referenced all of the background story that was available. You made Kemba feel like an actual character and her interactions with that swordsmith made me smile. I'm a little bothered by the obvious reference to the oil but it was a nice touch. Real talk, Kemba's too much of a badass to not get anyone she desires, male or female. :)

Rrrrrgh, I hate to imagine that the Mirrans were forgotten in that fashion, but certainly a part of me regretted Quest for Karn for more than its bad writing in how quickly it forgot characters, or hell, characterisation as a whole <<
Although I get the main Wizards website's idea of showing the war diaries from a ground up perspective of the Phyrexian war trying to show a more grounded experience, I do wish they'd made time to look at the more prominent characters in the war, but, I take small solace in the fact Kemba wasn't alone in such treatment as the other Legendaries in the block
I didn't know about the shout-out from Puresteel =O Any chance you can tell me about that?
As for Kemba's art, ursh, it's still a sore subject, so I won't go near that one with a stick, and I won't blame you for going on there if you're passionate about the subject to make a stance on it =o While I agree that I'm not sure about Magic trying the two block system, or the elimination of the novels, it is nice to see Magic focusing on story and with hopes that they'll improve with time, but I am happy that they've been inclusive of so many of the previous legendary characters also, even if only brought up in part, it had been a big concern of mine Legendary characters would be forgotten with the big emphasis on the Origins 5 now =o
In any case, story wise, I'm glad you enjoyed and happy to hear that I managed to flesh out Kemba nicely enough
Yes, the referencing to the oil was a little on the nose, but, I did want it to infer enough what would happen afterward =x As well as tying back to the snippets about Juryan trying to capture and use these strange creations to his cause
More than anything though, it's nice to hear that Shier was well received, may have to art her sometime =D
