About half of us use the Hengeyokai, a 3rd party animal race, but a lot of us just re-skin other base races.
Not actually as nasty as you might think. Lances only deal double damage on the charge when the user is mounted, meaning a taur using one doesn't get the bonus (unless of course you are playing Ponyfinder rules, where there is a feat to let ponies do just that).
That said, I have played a character who rode their eidolon around, using teamwork feats between the two to decimate enemy movement.
