You are my Sunshine, my only Sunshine...
Muninn, Aliranne's crow, flew out of the cave where the magic door was situated. Brimelle didn't need the confirmation of the mage to know that the bird had succeeded in solving the enigma and was now flying towards the last piece needed to finally open the passage. The centauress started galloping right behind the black feathered animal, trying not to trip in the sun bathed sand that let her hooves sink down as if it were golden snow. She lost track of Muninn after a few minutes, but she already knew where he was going: after all, she had known the answer to the riddle all along.
She reached Tarsis in roughly twenty minutes and went straight for the Temple of Mishakal; the crow was waiting right outside, pecking at the door with his strong beak. The time to fetch Chaldar from the priestess and they were back on their way. Again, after twenty minutes of running, Brimelle found herself once again inside the man-made cave with the little ecstatic girl on her back and Kon es Kaz looking at her with a dangerous glare.
The minotaur went for the girl, putting her over his shoulders, not willing of letting her go for all the gold in the world. Brimelle shrugged, she did what had to be done, they all knew now that the girl was the final piece. Suddenly, Kon es Kaz found himself struggling against an invisible force which was trying to snatch away Chaldar from him. He tried to keep his grip with all of his might, but he was risking to choke her or break her neck! Reluctant, he let go of her, while she kept smiling, still excited, even in the face of such strange happenings.
And then, disaster struck.
She was brought, by the invisible force, in front of the basin. As soon as she was in the right position, four ghostly arms came out of the stone wall, grabbing the little girl, one on the neck, the others on the rest of her body. The eyes of the high-reliefs of Paladine and Mishakal were full of sadness while Takhisis's were glowing red and her sardonic smile turned into an even more wicked one. The arms made the swift gesture of ripping the poor little Chaldar to pieces. Brimelle closed her eyes, uncapable of withstanding such sight, but when she opened them again, she discovered that no drop of blood was staining the floor: instead, a pile of ashes now laid where the red-headed child was hovering. The arms were gone too, only a fragment of a gray gem was left as a replacement.
Shocked, shaken, Brimelle looked around. In that moment, she saw what she had done: she had killed Chaldar to -open a door-. She had put the life of a little kid on a lower level than a library. But as she was trying to put a tiny bit of sense into her thoughts, she noticed that the door was opening. Without even thinking about what she was saying, she muttered.
"I was right."
Next thing she knew, a minotaur was charging her, pushing her figure with his huge armored body and wounding her human side with his battleaxe. She didn't respond, she didn't react, she just fell on the ground, not even protecting herself from the attacks. On the contrary, the other party members did intervene. Aliranne cast "Charm" to calm the anthropomorphic cow, which succeeded and, as Kon es Kaz was going outside of the cave to have some time alone, Vorador took care of Brimelle's wound.
...You make me happy when skies are gray...
Aliranne and Brimelle came back from the library. Strangely enough, Vorador and Ruru could not enter: as soon as they put a foot inside the corridor with three rows of purple crystals, on which the magic door opened, the first would feel a horrible wound to his chest and left arm while the latter would feel as if he was being crushed by a giant building. They didn't miss on anything in particular, only a room with a useless loom, an old wool winder and.. four gems which contained the figure of Ruru, Brimelle, Vorador and Kon inside.
Suddenly, a creepy, cold voice echoed through the building.
"YYyYyYYYOooOOoOoUuuUuuUU!!"
Brimelle turned around slowly, the blood frozen in her veins. A spirit, something that resembled a banshee, was pointing at her.
"YyyYYyoooOuUuUUu KKkKkKkkIiIiiiiIIiLLLLlLlllLllEEeEeEEddDDdDD MmmMmmMMMMMEeEEEEEEEeeeEeE!!!"
Brimelle whispered the word "Chaldar..." with what little breath she had left into her lungs before turning around, avoiding to be grabbed by the banshee's hand for sheer luck, running like crazy in order to escape the horrific vision. She found Kon es Kaz to block her path. He was just coming back from his "time alone" and was occupying all the space required for the centaur to exit the cave.
"Brimelle, I won't let you pass unless you tell me what's happening."
He said in his warm, deep voice as Brimelle kept muttering utter rubbish, terrified. A few moments later, Vorador called them both: he was able to enslave the spirit for at least one day so she couldn't be going around murdering Brimelle anytime soon. Vorador and Sliranne explained to Kon how to free Chaldar once and for all. He nodded.
Kon es Kaz walked slowly towards the spirit. He sat right in front of it, or rather, her, talking to her in a calm tone.
"Chaldar, I'm going to take you to a better place. It's called the River of Souls, it's a beautiful place, there's even a garden for you to play in and many other new people to meet, friend to make.."
The spirit, which was gradually changing its appearance, matching the one she had in life, raised her head.
"My last wish.. is to see the library with you."
At those words, Kon es Kaz stood up offering his hand to the restless spirit. Together, they started walking the corridor.
Kon es Kaz, immediately, felt a terrible ache in his chest, as if he was being pierced by a sword. The ache got worse the more far he went, but he didn't give up; he kept walking and walking until the ache was barely bearable when it suddenly stopped, right after he passed the third row of crystals. With the ache, he also felt the hand of the little Chaldar leaving him.
"Thank you.."
She whispered before disappearing in the stone walls of that cursed place.
...You'll never know, dear, how much I love you...
Kon es Kaz was walking back to Tarsis after encasing his axe in the stone floor right in front of Brimelle, his angry eyes glaring at her with fierce rage. Brimelle thought about what happened a few moments before inside the library and asked herself if she had made the right choice...
They were able to bring even Vorador and Ruru inside the room with the loom, wool winder and gems. They all looked inside the gems, aside for the minotaur. He went straight for it with his axe, breaking it with no regrets. His image inside melted (and so did the shattered crystal gem outside) into a blue gooey substance which fell on the floor creating a small puddle. As soon as the whole thing was done, Kon looked around himself, apathetic, as if he had forgotten what emotions were. As id he had forgotten what everything was.
Brimelle neared the minotaur.
"Kon? Is everything alright?"
Of course it wasn't, he didn't even recognize his name. In a flash of intuition, she asked the mage for an empty vial and started filling it up with the blue goo. Only one third of the substance was inside the glass container when she made the minotaur drink it. With the centaur's excitement, Kon regained part of his memories, but didn't recognize anyone, not even Vorador, the first he had met on this mad adventure. Quickly, Brim went to scoop up half of the remaining goo, trying her best to make the minotaur, now crept out by what was happening, drink it again. Finally, Kon es Kaz remembered his name, Brimelle's, Vorador's and Ruru's. He had no idea of who Aliranne was, though, and surely did not remember Chaldar. Brimelle looked at her hooves: the last sip of goo lay there.
Should I make him forget what happened, she asked herself, so he won't live with that pain? Or shall I give him back his memories so that he will cherish in them once again? But if I do, he'll return to hate me..
In the end, she made what was best for everyone. She gave him the last bit of goo to drink and waited for the consequences.
Now, she tried to take the axe out of the stone, succeeding after way too many tries, looking at the figure of the minotaur, lonely walking towards Tarsis and wondering.
"Where did the Kender go..."
...Please don't take my Sunshine away.
In the evening, they were back in Tarsis, at the tavern where they would have made their stay for the night. Brimelle was calmly discussing with Vorador and Aliranne a plan to catch the Kender, who had run off again, when Kon es Kaz came up to her.
"Follow me."
He uttered harshly. Brimelle could do nothing but oblige. She followed him into his room, waiting for his next move.
He closed the door with his axe.
He came closer to the centaur.
His eyes were fixed in hers.
His rage was tangible.
He cracked.
His visage went from an expression of rage to one of pain, sorrow and misery. He sustained himself with the centaur's body, his back trembling, the metal of the armor rattling at his sighs and sobs, while his mouth muttered in the high pitched tone overwhelmed by tears.
"I'm s-s-sorry, I know y-you didn't... didn't mean to k-kill her, I'm s-sorry, oh Chalrad! Oh... my l-little Chaldar, Why!? WHY?!"
Brimelle started caressing his back, to comfort him. Tears were staining her eyes too, now. Her lips parted in order to soothe his mourning spirit with a power only bards are able to convey: she sang.
"You are my Sunshine,
My only Sunshine.
You make me happy,
When skies are gray.
You'll never know dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my Sunshine away."
