Cigar Review of the Week: Crowned Heads JD Howard Reserve
It's a new month and a new blend to review!
Went with a local favorite at the club in blends. Crowned Heads.
Brian McGee, our local rep is one of a kind and we love it when he comes to the
club, so I decided to give this a review.
JD Howard Reserve:
Wrapper: Brazilian Arapiraca
Binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Filler: Nicaragua
Pre-Light/Construction:
The look and feel to this little bastard is a dark brown wrapper. Slightly oily with a bit of a bite to it's appearance. Barely any seems from the first look around and visible veins, but in a sense that gives it more character. Firm to the touch like a good stick should be. The band it self made me feel like smoking something in a John Wayne film with the red and gold. After the slice, there was a good draw and I was excited about it. XD
The Burn Part 1:
2 words came to mind from the first few puffs. Cedar and Spice. A light black pepper spice mostly. I was right about the western look to it, b/c I felt like I was outside in the hot sun with a pleasant breeze as the only thing keeping me up as a stare down the SOB in a dual until I need to spit on a random scorpion. It was a tough and rough start. Let's keep going!
The Burn Part 2:
Surprisingly to me there were no hints of any sweet flavor that came into play. The cedar and spice however were evolving. The cedar had a little more of outdoor feel to it soon became a little more floral in the mix.The spice stayed in the same postion a little more until it swayed back a bit. I guess it had to take a break from smacking me in the head, b/c it was getting a bit intense on the part but mellowed out a bit. It was alot of pep to take in for the first to 3rds until all of a sudden a sweet friend came into play, but was a bit dark and mellowed out the pallet a bit. Mainly a dark coffee premise to even things out a bit.
The Burn Final:
The dark coffee, black pepper, and floral cedar in the end of this bastard was a pleasant way to end the brutal first few puffs. It was like the dual stand-off from earlier ended up with both me and the other gun wielder having a cup of coffee and a biscuit by the end of it shooting the shit. With the last few puffs, I laid it to rest in the ashtray with a cowboy farewell tipping my hat.
Verdict:
Balls, you gotta' have them to smoke something this intense to have a satisfying end to it. Like watching a film where you are desperate to see the bad guy get killed in the end. Pretty much the factor that we all want, is a good ending. This is a bad boy in the cigar world. Rough at first and then becomes your best friend in the end. Over all I recommend it!
