Chimeras are the Inner Sphere counterpart to the Clans' ProtoMechs. At a weight between 2 and 9 tons they fill the gap between the battle armor and the battlemech. However that's where similarities end.
ProtoMechs are oversized battle armor that mount battlemech weapons. Chimeras are miniaturized battlemechs that mount battle armor weapons. Instead of a gyroscope and a normal cockpit the Chimera mounts a reverse-engineered ProtoMech cockpit and is controlled by a device called the PSI module, a system that uses both the emergency motivational control system for mechs (which keeps the mech on its feet if the gyro's been damaged or destroyed) and the medical sensors mounted on artificial limbs to control the movement of the unit.
This pic shows the Strega, the first Chimera ever built. It was cobbled together using several battle armor components and primarly used to show that the idea actually works. Equipped with a light machine gun and three rocket launcher tubes, it provides little firepower against armored units but is very effective against conventional infantry.

Thank you. ^^
Working on the games rules atm. I still need to find out what BA equipment I could use, and I definitely need to check out the battle values of my first designs and compare them to the BVs of the ProtoMechs. Not that I accidently create a bunch of munchkins.

Correct, but as far as I can tell atm, all Chimeras I created so far are as strong (maybe a TINY TINY bit stronger) than the ProtoMechs of the same weight. Chimeras may mount more weapons and equipment (Chimeras: 8 weapons + 8 pieces of equipment, Protos: 5 items in total), but those weapons are a lot weaker (and have a shorter range) than the guns the Clans have in their arsenal. Not to mention that Chimeras have a speed limit (max. 8/12), a reactor limit (max. 100), and they may NOT mount energy weapons (I feel that adds some spice to the design).
It sounds high, BUT you cannot mount that many items at all (you only got the mount points for it). Any item that has some real power needs at least two mount points, and you cannot mount any item anywhere. Weapons are mounted on the arms and the torso, equipment is mounted on the legs and the torso as well (and some items cannot be mounted if you added certain weapons, for example). The highest bumber I got so far is 10, which is on my Gerlov light battlemech hunter: 4 popup mines, 2 mine dispensers, and four Magshot Gauss weapons. And it only works because the armor is relatively thin (26 points).
Price tag is 496,851 C-Bills.
Max speed is 86 kph, but it cannot jump (the techs didn't want to put too much stuff into their prototype). Improved heat sensor (works like an active probe with a 1-hex radius), searchlight, and TAU module (Target Acquisition Unit, an improved targeting computer that conquers the +1 attack modifier penalty for ballistic weapons on Chimeras).
The Strega is faster than the 2-ton Protos fielded by the Clans and has better armor, even though it only carries commercial armor.

Well, that would violate the laws of physics (fusion reactors cannot explode because there's not enough reaction mass in it to cause a fusion explosion, and pouring more hydrogen into the chamber will simply cause the nuclear fire to extinguish).
BUT it's for the lulz, so it's fine with me. So, you want a built-in suicide button for your unit? I think the techs could prep the PSI module with the necessary software update and the extra wiring - for about, let's say, 250 extra C-Bills? I think that should be worth it to be able to have a 2-ton bomb on two legs.
