Oh! I see what you mean. I would call that technique rather than hard rules. I tend to use soft darks, like Dark Brown or Black Grape, to etch in the shadowy details like the crevasses in the fur or the reflection in the glass, then use lighter colors, then use darker colors, then liquefy the pencils and paint with them using Turpenoid, then go in and layer more colors. I go about it very haphazardly.
Now, I wouldn't use a dark color in those super white areas, of course. Does this make sense or help?

Turpenoid is odorless turpentine and is normally used for oil painting and cleaning brushes. It also breaks down the wax in colored pencils so you can push the pigments around with a brush, tissue, fingers whatever. Imagine a watercolor painting and you wet down a brush and smoosh it around. Same kind of thing. I recommend trying it out!
The wax binder also breaks down with prismacolor markers and rubber cement thinner. The markers are...eh. Not nearly s effective and it gums up the tips. I have never tried rubber cement thinner.

Wow, thank you so much! I'm DEFINITELY going to have to try that. I'll look for some odorless turpentine ASAP! Yay!
You do amazing things with it. I couldn't wrap my mind around how you managed to get this piece to look that way. I guessed acrylic painting when I first saw it. Marvelous!
Oh, I have however tried something like that with the prismacolor markers. I definitely agree.. Totally gummed up the tips. x.x
In any case, thank you again! *hugs!*

He looks a little surprised at the size of the drink, or is that a grin on his face?
Either way, I think someone in some Arabian bar is going to find their drink a gulp short when they come back and a passed out fennec on the bar table. I couldn't see their little bodies taking much more alcohol than maybe a human sized gulp. But that is just me, I'd feel sick myself thinking of a fennec drinking a full pint of strong beer.
I think you did pretty good on the pint sized foxy. I've always found it a bit hard to get the ears and face to look right myself.

Oh, I'm glad you done 'er up and coloured 'er! Especially with those wicked gleaming pupils (and I'm definitely seeing a beer-glass in the right one).
Now I can happily speculate on what might happen when she gets more than her own snout-and-neck length down the glass...

If I had to pick one thing I loved about your pieces, and it couldn't be the attentive and through lineart, or the amazing colors that simply blow my mind, I'd have to say the originality that eminates from your art is one of the best things I love about your work. Great job on this =D
I was wondering who did this piece of art. Couldn't find it after that first time I ran across it. The proportions on the fox are great; his eyes and ears to body. The size comparison to the beer is a nice touch. Gives a clear idea as to how big the little guy is. Well done.
Fennecs are adorable and guiness is good, that makes this pic awesome.
Also, if you don't mind me asking a question.
I want to try drawing fur texture. I know I will need a lot of practise to make it look nice, but practise is always good.
Now I'd like to know, is drawing good fur texture a natural talent or intuition, or are there some strict rules to follow. Maybe both?
Also, do you know a good technique or style to start practising fur texture? If I am shoved in the right direction I can probably find my own way.
I thank you for your time!
PS: You really draw adorable fennecs... ^^
