tbh she has tripled her prices since 2010 when the same piece would of been $500... it doesnt cost $750 to gather the paints and canvas (which is only 60 x 45 cm so not even a large canvas) paints would most likely cost at most $100, the canvas about $50 to $75 if its a medium to high quality... oh and dont forget shipping which is another $40 for me (i live in the uk)
You also forget 2 things in your comment. That's 6 years more skill she's garnered. And if you could draw it, she wouldn't be open for commissions. She set those prices I'm sure for a number of reasons, honestly which are none of our business but the main reason people get art from artists is because /they themselves/ can't do it. They like the style and you're either willing to pay for that or not. It's at your digression. They offer the service. You want it, you'll pay for it.
Maybe I can help shed light on this. When you buy art from a professional, you are *not* buying just the materials. You're buying a lifetime of skill and experience. The biggest thing is you're buying that artists *time*. Time is valuable and can only be split up in so many ways. SixLeafClover is a professional that gets a lot of freelance work (read this in a comment below: "I didn't do any commission projects last year due to being swarmed commercial projects for companies.") and if they're like me, will opt for a professional gig over a private client (aka what people commission for on FA).
Any decent artist can get some pretty good traction in 6 years, hence her price increase. She has more demand and higher demand means less time, and less time means it's more valuable (not to mention her skills have gotten even better since then).
A painting that is 24x36 inches (if you're looking at digital) or even the 19x24 inches for a canvas is a pretty large size for a high detailed piece. If it takes her 40 hours to complete the painting, not even counting materials that's barely $37/hour, and then you get a *physical original* as a result. Minus cost of materials it's probably more around $35/hour, but I am completely guessing on the amount of time it takes.
The bottom line is, art is NOT simply the cost of materials. To say so is to spit in the face of anyone who creates art for a living - not to mention a complete lack of understanding for business and economics.

Its this kind of tightwad attitude that gets all furries a bad rap outside of the furdom bubble. We get it, six leaf is a great artist, but asking for justification on the price maybe even an expense report be it traditional arts class at a university, color theory, supplies, time taken out of professional work, etc, isn't grounds for being condescending to someone who is just asking why.
I'm pretty sure Sixthleaf isn't a full time private (Furaffinity) freelance artist anyways, they always struck me as someone who works in professional freelance, and if they're getting 3-8000 per illustration, the fact that they're selling them for 750 to us common folk is a damned blessing.
Also there's hundreds of thousands of artists out there with much lower prices, feel free to shop around in your price range, because check Sixthleafs commission queue, they're still getting clients-and will likely continue to.
You don't walk into a high end car dealership and whine that smart cars are cheaper, so don't do it to artists either.

i am aware of that lol, im just saying that soon people will want a bit more than a 2ft by 1 1/2 canvas... its like going to the bakery to buy a loath of crusty bread to find out that its hollow inside, the bread might be the best in the world but you will still feel cheated because of the lack of filling
But..... I could get a Fiat for a fraction of the cost of this Porsche!
It's not just about quality, or 'performance' though. SLC stands out in uniqueness.
As for the price hike that was mentioned, well, that's probably a matter of supply and demand.
I sure as hell can't afford this stuff. Can't afford a lot of things :-P 'Tis life.

Only tripled her prices in the last 6 years? You do know how long 6 years are right? Look at artists like Thanshuhai and how much growth he's shown in his art for the span of just 1 year. Then come back to me and say 6 years isn't worth tripling her price.
Not just that, have you seen her gallery? I'm just a new follower myself but gods be damned if that's not a top quality and full of content as you've eloquently said

Looking at the quality and size, you're probably talking something that will take a minimum of 20 hours of work. 'Fresh out of art school' commission work is worth $20/hr and SLC is hardly a fresh out of art school scrub so at least double that.
I'm lowballing and have already hit $800 for labour alone.
Far too many furry artists rip themselves off by charging below minimum wage for their work. Don't be so shocked when you run into the ones that charge what their time is worth.

I didn't do any commission projects last year due to being swarmed commercial projects for companies. I am opening up a public commission queue this year and have made a waiting list: https://goo.gl/wbdTKK

Artists are a dime a dozen, but art like this, with this much detail, skill, attention to anatomy, and time put in is certainly worth the cost.
You should see some of the prices on "fine art" in galleries that pales in comparison to this. Being an artist isn't easy; when you're this good and this well-known, a piece you can hang proudly on your wall forever is worth it. And this is custom art. We get spoiled thinking this stuff grows on trees, being on a site full of art makers, but really, to have someone this good paint you something CUSTOM, it's a pretty big treat.

Worth every penny to the right people and you KEEP charging what you need and want to for that wonderful art you make. You spent god only knows how many years perfecting that wonderful style you have and it's worth it.
To the whiners, just because you can't afford years of skill and hard work doesn't devalue anything this artist does. It just means you can't afford it. I can't afford a lambo, doesn't mean I'm going to call them and bitch because I want it but can't afford it.

Wow guys. I. wow. I just cannot understand how uneducated and pathetic you are. What you are seeing here are realistic pieces of art comparable to pictures I have seen in museums. The colors, shadings, lighting and values are so on point it looks like the character are gonna wink at me. Do you even realize how long it takes, what kind of guts the artist needed to reach that kind of quality? I can't believe you are complaining about prices on such breath-taking art. Yall are so used to artists underpaying themselves because you can't pay for shit cuz it's all about you getting your shitty wolfsona drawn for ten bucks. You should shut up and be happy an actual professional artist graced you with their talent and even offered to draw it for you, for a fair price.
Sorry if the grammar isn't all that great, when I'm pissed my english suddenly downgrades. Peace.

The lacks of ''proper', post-renassnaire style of artworks, especially in traditional form, is the major reason why there is no fair pricing on many art sites. The world is flooded with pop arts, miniminisitc, cartoonish and such in digital forms as I saw it.
To be honest, her price is really steep, yet there are rare willing artists who would pay large amount of time and artistic perspectives to perform delicate creation, so I say she deserve to make it so to answer our typical mindset about furry arts.

One day I hope. It's always been a desire to get a piece of art done by you (I have my heart set on something traditional). One day my finances will match my art hoard wants, lol.
Until then, I love seeing what you come up with. Your work is an inspiration and a joy to behold, and I hope you enjoy what you do!
