When a cat sees a cucumber, imediate instinct tells it, the cat to react, because the color, and shape resembles a snake. But because they react do quick, they don't realize it's actually a harmless vegitable.

Close but it's a bit different than that. A cat eats in the place it feels is the most known, trusted and safest spot in the house. If you put a cucumber, or anything for that matter, near a cat when it's eating and it does not detect you do it, it freaks out as you have changed its environment. This, long term, can lead the cat to distrust you or the spot it previously ate at and avoid it when food time comes around. The idea of a cucumber reminding old instincts of it maybe being a snake is an urban legend.

That and the fact that cats do not have depth perception does not help
