Because sometimes, furries do indeed intermingle in the BattleTech community. Do they make sense in the setting? No, not really. Do BattleMechs make sense? Not really! I think we’re fine.

Basically for lack of any other reference of the inside of a cockpit I'm going to defer to MWO on the griffin's scale, which means that rather than the glass bubble surrounding the pilot's head and thus field of vision, it surrounds him and the cockpit equipment wholly. This supports the fact that infantry are, generally speaking, depicted as being pretty insignificant next to mechs.
There's also this image that directly shows a pilot infront of his Griffin, though the HBS concept art for Battltech is generally considered to make the mechs a bit on the large side.

If anyone happens to know how tall the 55 ton GRF-1N battlemech is supposed to be I would be interested to know.
I did manage to discover that the mecha that was the basis for the original GRF-1N artwork was supposed to be 10 meters tall and 30.5 metric tons: http://www.mahq.net/mecha/dougram/dougram/h8.htm

Scale varies between 'Mechs from game to game. Anywhere from 6-19 meters, but I generally go by cockpit size. The Griffin I'd peg at a solid 7.5-9 meters given the elongated limbs and relatively small proportioned cockpit. Making it one of the lankier lights, but long limbs=gofast.
