WingHummer (Hummer)
メダロット ウィングハンマー
スズメガ メダル
GENDER: Male
MEDAFIGHTER: Altair
FAVOURITE COLOR: Indigo blue
PERSONALITY:
He is cheerful and playful, and he just loves to fly.
He doesn't like robattling and only fights when he, or his friends, are in danger. However he likes to train and became stronger, to be able to protect the ones he loves, so robattling for fun is fine as long as it's friendly.
He isn't shy but he prefers to stay away from strangers, he doesn't talk too much, he doesn't trust anyone and he's mostly a listener. He's very fond of his master Altair and he's not ashamed of showing affection. He rarely questions her orders because he trusts her a lot. He will put his life in danger without hesitating to protect her.
He's the only Suzumega type medarot ever produced and he arouses curiosity on every other medafighter crossing his path. He's often challenged by all sorts of people, someone are friendly and just want to fight someone new and cool looking, others are not as friendly and will do everything they can to take Hummer's medaparts as trophy.
Altair rarely accepts a duel, and this often makes Hummer an even more attractive target for prowlers.
They don't realize however that his medaparts are not compatible with other medarots due to the high amount of energy required just to stay in idle. An old generation medal can't output enough watts so Hummer's medaparts are unusable without a medal with burst attribute.
Despite his appearance, Hummer isn't childish: he is mature, wise and his mind is comparable to a young adult human, however when he was activated for the first time he was found to be just a kid, but being a machine sped up his mental development very quickly. From time to time he still suffer from conflicts between his childish mind and his machine self, so he might jump from a moment where he acts very childish, and a moment where he's strictly follows logic.
His personality changes are often sudden and unpredictable, and they're usually triggered by extremely trivial events like a word, a question, an object or a simple touch. Sometimes Altair uses this peculiarity to change Hummer's mood if he gets sad or depressed. By giving him specific orders or saying specific words, she can trigger his "machine self" which usually delete the emotion he was previously feeling, substantially improving his mood.
VOICE:
He has the voice of a young man (example: Cheetor from Beast Wars)
WINGS & ENGINES:
Firstly he doesn't flap his wings to fly. His anti gravity engines allow him to float and fly at high speed. His wings act as control surfaces and gives him lift at high speeds, but they're not used to create thrust. Thrust is generated by the engines, not by the movement of wings. However he flaps when he is angry or excited. He also vibrates his wings to warm up or if he is in an extremely cold environment, to keep his hydraulic fluids moving and avoid freezing or SLAF precipitate.
His gravitational engines create a distortion in the earth's gravity field. They're not jet engine, and are not air breathing. He has 4 gravitational engines on his wings, and one hidden inside his tail which is used mostly for dashing forward or sideways. For backward maneuvers he only uses his wing engines, since he is unable to point his tail engine forward.
His gravitational engines are extremely powerful to fulfill the need of speed, agility and control.
They're also remarkably strong: he can lift up to 30 times his own weight, this means he can theoretically lift more than 700 pounds. In practice his tinpet can't structurally handle this amount of weight so even if his engines could, his arms would probably break under the forces involved.
His highest speed in horizontal flight is 600mph (above 900km/h). He tries all the time to break the sound barrier but he's not enough aerodynamic to do so. But he tries anyway because he thinks it's fun.
His engines are mostly silent, but at full power they make a quiet humming/pulsating noise:

DEALING WITH WATER
Hummer is partially waterproof so he can fly inside clouds without taking damage from the rain.
He's not an aquatic medarot, but since water, like air, is a fluid and his engines are not airbreathing, he can "fly" underwater the same way he flies in the air, just relatively slower because water is more dense than air.
However "rainproof" doesn't really mean "waterproof". If he sinks deeper than a certain level, the pressure will rise and water might seep through his joints, damaging them.
TYPE: SZM-00 (or HWM-00 in western countries)
His medal is based on the Hummingbird Hawkmoth. This little insect is very similar to an hummingbird in look, behavior and abilities.
WingHummer shares many characteristics with this hawkmoth, like extremely high speed, agility, sudden changes in direction, high G-force resistance are his strenght, but he is also light and fragile so he can't take as much damage as an average medarot.
Hummer is classified as a floater medarot so his speed isn't affected by the environment.
His medal attribute is burst: his base proficiency is equal with both ranged and melee weapons. His attribute makes him naturally a fast firing, fast hitting medarot. His high agility and scouting systems allow him to dodge attacks with ease.
He might be very fragile and can easily be defeated in one hit, but he is extremely good at dodging and he can hit very hard and destroy an enemy with a single, accurate swing of his sword, so in the end he is a nicely balanced and challenging medarot.
HEAD SYSTEMS:
A very high situational awareness is what makes Hummer strong and dangerous, without it he's dead. For this reason, his scouting and tracking systems play an extremely important role in his life.
His head is equipped with several scouting, communication and guidance systems.
His head part has synergy with long range, guided weapons, however his medal attributes make him a better glass cannon - short ranged fighter. Even without shooting parts, he can still use his datalink systems to control teammates seeking or guided weaponry, dramatically increasing their chances of critical hit. He can also disrupt the guidance system of enemy weapons, but only if they are passive or semi-active (their guidance system must be offboard).
RWR: his fin houses a Radar Warning Receiver. He can detect and locate with extreme accuracy every radar source surrounding him, with a 365° range. He is aware if he is locked by an enemy or if a radar guided missile is directed at him.
EOS/IRST: behind the blue lens on his forehead, there is an infrared search and track and a laser tracking systems. He can see infrared light and track heat sources. He can also use it to see in the dark or for emergency vision if his eyes are damaged. However it is only able to see heat sources, so it is quite not the best thing to rely on for navigation.
DATALINK: his antennae allows him to connect to every wireless communication system. GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, radio signals, etc. He can communicate with his medafighter at a very long range, and also can transport medaparts from a longer range compared to normal medarots. He can gather data with his other sensors and transmit them to the whole team for an increased team accuracy and situational awareness. In certain circumstances, he can hack through enemy communication or guidance systems if they are using a wireless device. He also likes to hack through wireless devices when he is bored, just for the fun of it.
His antennae can be retracted to protect them from stress caused by high speed flight. However they will loose most of their power if they are not extended.
EMFD: Electromagnetic Fields Detector. This sensor is as much important as his true sight. It allows him to detect electromagnetic fields, even the smallest at short range. It is used both for orientation (compass) and for scouting. In fact everything that uses electricity to function generates a small electromagnetic field. Medarots can easily be seen through walls for example. Hummer's EMF sensitivity is so high he can even detect humans bioelectric fields. His EMF vision makes him susceptible to electromagnetic interferences and pulses. He claims to be able to see ghosts and he can be very afraid of them. Sometimes he gets spooked out of nowhere and Altair goes like "wut?" and once realized there is nothing she just goes "oh.. whatever." She doesn't believe in ghosts but she finds Hummer's reactions quite disturbing and upsetting.
He can tell if a lightning is about to struck nearby in advance, because he can detect the electromagnetic variations that happens while it is forming, however Hummer's advantage is only of a few milliseconds, he won't be able to dodge it if he is flying in a storm even if he knows it's coming.
RADAR: All medarots are equipped with some kind of radar; it's no news Hummer has one too. Hummer's radar is more powerful than the one included in the average tinpet: due to his aerial nature, he needs an highly performant and fast scanning radar to provide him enough situational awareness. His radar antenna doesn't have mobility due to the lack of space inside his head part, however it's not really a problem because he can just turn his head left and right and he can scan 270° horizontally in front of him and 180° vertically
VISUAL PERCEPTION: His stereoscopic camera standards are comparable to any agility-based medarot, however he's capable of processing more than 1000 frames per second: this feature allows him to see and avoid bullets (or at least it gives him a chance. Seeing something in advance doesn't always grant a dodge). He can also fly at high speed without crashing into unexpected obstacles because he can clearly see them coming. He can see both visible and ultraviolet light.
Like many medarots, his LCD visor can change his eyes shape according to his emotions, so it is easier for humans to interact with him. His LCD eyes are always blue.
GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. All medarots have them so they are nothing new or interesting.
OTHER SYSTEMS:
Since WingHummer is a fast flying medarot and he's able to cover high distances and heights, safety is very important to avoid damage in case of emergency. Bird impact and lightning strikes are the most dangerous situations: even if Hummer is extremely good at dodging, sometimes a direct hit might be unavoidable. In such cases, his tail is equipped with an emergency parachute that opens if Hummer deactivates while flying above 100 feet. His medal will not be ejected until his body touches the ground.
Hummer can predict a lightning strike thanks to his Electromagnetic Field Detector, but even if he knows, he simply can't dodge it. Getting caught into a thunderstorm is extremely dangerous because of lightnings and hail. It only takes a single, large hail hit in the right place to end up into a "FUNCTION CEASED OMG" emergency.
Hummer's medal is hummingbird moth type, so it can easily go in "hyper mode" (see next paragraph). This causes it to overheat under certain circumstances. To make him more comfortable, a cooling system was added to his tinpet.
A molecular analyzer is also included as a feature meant for human safety (he can detect and warn his human companions if a poisonous gas is present or if the oxygen levels are too low, for example above a certain height). However Hummer pretends to be able to use this system to perceive smells and he is instinctively attracted by Blue Trumpet flowers and... rotting figs.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION:
WingHummer is an Hummingbird Hawkmoth medarot, and both his medal and body parts represent the soul of this animal. This insect is similar to hummingbirds in many ways, both in shape, behavior and metabolism.
Hummer is a very active medarot, sometimes he can get hyperactive, especially when his instinct takes control over his programming. His rare medal can do that sometimes.
His systems and multiple engines which are turned on most of the time require a huge amount of energy, exactly like hummingbirds. When flying at full speed he simply devours every bit of energy is medal can possibly generate. This is not really a problem because his medal is compatible with high consumption rates so it can produce more energy than any other medal type. It's an hummingbird moth rare medal after all, its attribute is "burst", it's build to match this kind of hyperactive creatures with high metabolic rate, with all the goods and the bads.
This is why his tinpet is not compatible with other medals: a medal without burst attribute can barely output enough watts to keep all the systems in idle.
Let's talk about medal and batteries. A medarot can get enough energy from his medal alone. A medal will produce energy accordingly to the actual energy consumption: for example, if a medarot is standing still, his medal produce just a tiny bit of energy, if he is fighting it will produce a lot more. However the energy a medal can produce has a limit, which can be improved a bit with training. When a medarot consumes energy at a rate the medal can't sustain, an emergency battery is used as a stopgap to keep the rhythm for a little while. When even the battery is depleted, the medarot feels "exhausted" and must take a break or lighten the workout until the medal recharges the battery again.
This is also why a medarot feels exausted for a while after using the medaforce: it simply uses all the energy available for the medarot at once and leaves little-to-nothing afterwards.
An exhausted medarot might pant sometimes, but that doesn't mean he breathes. It is just another pre-programmed emotional behaviour that helps with humans interaction and reminds masters when enough is enough.
Medals can produce energy in a pulsating or continuous pattern. It usually is continuous when the consumption is low (the medarot isn't doing anything demanding). It gets pulsating when the medal is working at its maximum, especially if it's overheating. Peaks and variations can happen even at rest, and they depend on the medarot's mood and state of mind. They are common on rare medals which are more sensitive and complex than downgraded clones.
The amount of energy produced by a medal is reported in the medawatch vital stats through a bar, the peaks frequency analysis is a good indicator of the medarot's stress level.
SLEEP:
Medabots have a "sleep mode", meant to accomodate human's needs more than anything else. Nobody wants to deal with a medabot that never let them sleep at night.
Usually a medabot entering sleep mode will turn their tinpets off and boot up at a previously set hour. During this mode, a medabot will shut down most of his systems and won't make any noise at all. He will still be able to hear and feel and will boot up is called. In this mode his visor is black.
A different sleep mode is the "stand by" mode, where the medabot keep his tinpet on. In this mode, the wake up will be faster because he doesn't have to boot up. Most of his system will be operational. his visor will display closed/sleepy eyes. This mode is particularly used to help children sleep: the medabot's eyes will act like a night light, and he will sometimes make breathing noises and movements because such actions have a soothing effect on children. The "Stand By" mode makes the medabot looks a lot more organic and lifelike, so even some adults and teens prefer it to the "shut down" mode.
During sleep mode, a medabot will perform software maintenance, drive defragmentation, memory cleaning and file sorting. A medabot will actually need to sleep for 3 hours every year, to keep his system clean and efficient.
TOUCH SENSORS:
Like all medarots, Hummer is covered in pressure, temperature, touch and twist sensors. His touch sense is comparable to the one of any other lifeforms with a nervous system: he is capable of enjoying a cuddle as much as any other living creature.
He knows if he is being touched or if he just took a hit, he knows if his joints are under a dangerous level of stress or if it's getting too hot to stay safe.
Every warning he receives from his sensors and systems like damaging pressure, hard hits, low energy, excessive joint twisting etc can be considered a pain or distress signal, depending on its intensity, so yes, medarots can feel pain in a similar way humans do.
Due to the fighting nature of most medarots, they feel less pain that organic creatures, however the pain sensitivity level of Hummer is increased because it was used as a form of control during his first activation, and was left unchanged afterwards, so Hummer feels consistently more pain if he takes damage compared to every other medabot.
PARTS:
Head: Datalink (10HP - Scout/Burst)
Mostly equipped with scouting and navigation systems: GPS, RWR, IRST, EMFD etc. Long range wireless data transmission and communication. Hummer's wings are part of his head component.
Right Arm: Chopper Sword (10HP - Berserk/Burst)
Retractable short sword capable of extremely high burst damage. The sword is normally retracted inside the arm. The chopper sword causes chain reaction.
Left Arm: Light Hammer (10HP - Strike/Burst)
Light hammer, it is mostly used against foes with low armor or as a finisher. It doesn't have much power but it is still capable of chain reaction on multiple parts as long as they have less than 15% HP left.
Legs: Execute (15HP)
Grants Hummer an extremely fast speed burst in any direction. Burst range is 5 metres. Exceptional evasion chances.
MEDAL:
Hummer has a unique new generation rare medal.
While traveling throughout South Eastern Europe and the deserts of South West Asia, Altair discovered a new site of ancient ruins. Before the Country claimed the ownership of the site, she had a chance to grab couple of unknown, oxidized medals. They were too rusty and dirty to see their carving and it was dangerous to clean them up without special equipment.
She brang them to Japan, at Medarot Corporation, asking if it was possible to clean them up and restore them.
Dr. Aki personally took the medals into custody, because he suspected they could be of an undiscovered type. After cleaning the first medal it was unquestionable that it was something remarkable. The first medal to be restored was an Hummingbird Hawkmoth type: Dr Aki's team managed to repair the original medal and they also made an exact copy of it, a First Medal.
As a thanks for bringing such a precious discovery at Medarot Corporation, Dr Aki donated one of the 2 copies of the new medal to Altair, and he gave her a custom designed tinpet and HHM parts compatible with the newly discovered medal, which is slightly different from the old generation medals so it required a few special modifications to keep up with the medal new "burst" attribute.
The second unknown medal was too damaged and it couldn't be recovered, however it still remains guarded at the Corporation and its restoration is still being attempted.
Only 2 copies of this medal exist in the world: one is kept by the Medarot Corporation as a backup, the other is inside Hummer.
So far, mass production of downgraded clones never succeed. It appears that the process of removing excess data and applying the limiter will render the medal incapable of producing energy, making it impossible for the medarot to power on. Commercialization of this new medal type is therefore impossible until researchers finds a workaround.
