Actually, he's producing but not playing Kaneda according to the website I just browsed... he's a bit old for the part anyway. They're going to split the manga up into two movies, possibly allowing them to go into the depth of the story that was missing from the anime adaptation. The manga was very involved story-wise.

Ditto! Though I have some reservations; I hope that they are taking the bulk of their story straight from the original manga; at 1800 pages it had a lot of story to tell. Lots of subplots and complications as it pulled the reader into its world. I hope the live action film can capture that complexity.
