I hope this table will help to understand why this Club made. The Kalaks and the Dholes are known very little by the masses, and often misrecognized as Red Foxes while they are ofcourse not.
Only because they A, Dont read the species table at the zoo before they open there mounth B, They dont care C, They really dont care
Anyone who have a Kalak or Dhole char, often get comments like "What a cute Fox" here on FA. It can be very offending to some people's heart. I hope that this table will help to show people the difference between these Canids, and they will hopefully will succesfully recognize the "fox like" Canids in the future.
For the last words, Im not againts Foxes and this is table is not againts them. Simply I like to help people know these different and special not widely known Canids!
Thank you!

The Natives have more right to name them compared to the conquistadors....

And that's coming from a fox-type.What you're doing here is really good. I've got friends who are Wahs (AKA Red Pandas) who are constantly refered to as "that raccoon guy". So I totally understand where you're coming from. I've gotten the occasional "nice foxie, but why does he have 6 tails?". Species-wise, yes I'm a fox. But saying a kitsune is the same as a fox is like saying a Corvette is the same as a Cavalier because they're both Chevys, it doesn't really work!
Anyway, keep it up. It's good to see someone who cares enuff to try to educate the fandom.

Wel this is aimed for real Animal Species, not anthros and hybrids and other "only in phantasy" things. Kitsune in Mythology is a bit different manner, they had the common Red Fox animal form with some sort of "deformities" such as the multiaple tails, or butterfly wings etc., in human form they had some sort deformities what were able to be detected, such as triangle formed head, paws insted of feets etc.
So the reason people doesnt know, is either they don't read zoo signs, or they dont care²? What about simply not knowing?
I can see the difference in photographs.. But drawn, it can become harder to tell the difference, unless the artist is amazingly photorealistic about characature... Even I have trouble drawing a jackal, without it looking too fox like.. But thats just me.
If someone gets all offended about someone not knowing the difference from a fox, and canines looking almost like a fox, theyr just takeing things too damn personal, and proberbly gets pissed off by less. Really, everyone makes mistakes, and its not really everybody elses fauilt they didn't know what non-fox furries know, and apperently except people to know this just because they do.
Really, I would care a bit if people thought my fursona was a pink green spotted elephant, even though its obviously a plaine (and boring) brown fox, as long as I know what my fursona is, I see no problem. I got fare worse things to problemize

I have to agree with Giesji in that most people who look at a photograph of a manned wolf or a dhole would probably be able to recognize that those species are not foxes. However when people draw in a very cartoony format these animals have very similar phenotypes and it is hard to tell the difference, not necessarily out of ignorance but as a result of stylization. Heck in some anime pictures I can barely tell if its male or female.
That was just my 2 cents for people who take the issue too seriously, but I don't get that vibe from this.

I don't get offended by somebody mistaking my fursona as a fox. That'd be ridiculous seeing as how even as a kalak some of my markings are still...well...I guess I could say..."wrong".
I more or less joined for the sake of laziness...With the group icon on my profile page I shouldn't have to correct as many people. lol

at least these two species are VERY believable for how they can be confused.
hell, one of my characters i recently made looks like a border collie, but is a fox-wolf hybrid. (platinum fox patterns are amazingly close to BC's if ya add in black color mutations from the other parent into the normally gray/grey color patterns.) <on tha tnote, BC's don't look remotely close to woloves or foxes. obvious where the confusiong comes in from just the color patterns)
Dhole photo at first glances, if not noted otherwise, i believe many would think "FOX!" right away.
told me before, "big fox?" lol

This is one of my pet peeves, where everything that has orange fur and pointy ears is a fox.
My other pet peeve is where everything that's not a husky is a husky and actual huskies are "PART WOLF LOLZ!!"
Because obviously, since they're the closest descendant from wolves (at least believed by many), THEY'RE OBVIOUSLY A WOLF.
Pisses me right off. Too many times have I seen "my husky/wolf mix" and it's a malamute, or a husky, or a husky/Saarloos type dog, or even just a white Saarloos and they claim it's "about 75/85% wolf lol"

Also, I agree with some of the statements above: it's easy to tell the real animal from a fox, but when you draw it, and it looks like a fox, people are going to think it's a fox until told otherwise. It's not a case of not caring. It's not a case of not reading the plaque at the zoo. It's a case of the artist making it look like a fox.
It's easier to tell the differences between two animals in photography than it is in art, unless someone has a photorealistic art style.
