Why does no one ever just run through the obviously clear passageway that the monsters are nowhere near? I never understood the reasoning behind that trope. xD

Because instead of triggering an animal's natural instinct to chase after prey, she thought first to try and distract them. Plus, they don't know where that third passage goes, but they know the way out.
