Horizon's Edge - Assassin and Apprentice
Another teaser for Horizon's Edge, this was from a slavestream for Noblewolf of his character Nova as an assassin/mercenary and his mysterious underling, the scout known only as "NaN". He seems just a little familiar though... how will they connect to the overall story? That will have to wait until later in the year... ;)
One shot...one kill...
He felt his heart...slow...steady...beating to a rhythm unheard and steadied his breathing. The world around him was far away...his focus directed to the ranch below. He had to admit the reason for the job was amusing...a political enemy...despite the war...that still hadn't changed...and so he had been tasked with neutrlaizing the threat. It was relatively simple...take the shot...bring back the proof...get paid. Only problem was the guards. He had a feeling the target knew that someone was coming for him...and so they had planned ahead, Nova respected that...at least folks nowadays didn't seem as stupid as they had been...at least the apocalypse beat that into the survivors' heads. Usually, he'd be going solo...that's how it had been for five years...now though, he had an accomplice.
"How's it looking down there?" he asked.
"Too much traffic right now...they'll notice in a heartbeat." Nan responded.
Nova half laughed. "Course they will...looks like we still have a few minutes."
Nan acknowledged Nova with a nod as he lowered the binoculars. "Does it usually take this long?"
"You'd be surprised...sometimes it takes no time at all...other times...it can drag on for hours."
Nova's hair stirred with the hot desert breeze as he continued to look through the scope...the sun hadn't quite gone down yet, so they didn't have to worry about freezing quite yet. Nan stood behind him as the sand was kicked up and scanned the ranch once more.
"Might as well take him out now, he's in the can."
"Patience kid...how much traffic?"
"You've got a thirty second window by the looks of things."
"Got it." Nova began the countdown in his head. He steadied the rifle...braced for the knockback and pulled the trigger.
