Trying to bring it back oldschool when designs were designs, mechs were hard boxes, and not everything was a tornado of knives and taktikool gear in a vaguely man shape.

Hate to be the party pooper but old school mechs weren't all they're cracked up to be :P

Wait no that's a redesign, lemme find the original design.

oh.
In all seriousness I get what you mean, there were some pretty cool mechs from way back in the day, like the Timber Wolf(AKA Mad Cat).

How about NOT BATTLETECH MECHS?
Battletech's best mechs of the original era were all from Macross rather than original designs, and even for the late eighties/early nineties didn't comprise of all the mechs out there, not even western ones.
This mech looks far more Heavy Gear inspired, and Heavy Gear is almost as old as Battletech, and draws more heavily from VOTOMS.

Well if not Heavy Gear, how about something any mecha fan should know about like Robot Jox? Warhammer 40k? Arguably Transformers?
Even then why limit it to the west when GITS, Gundam, Appleseed, VOTOMS, Macross, Patlabor, and so many others have existed for ages, some of which battletech licensed the designs of and others they probably traced?

I don't think I'd qualify transformers, mainly because it's quite debatable whether or not they can be considered "mechs" at all as opposed to robots, 40k really has never been about the various "mechs" in universe either imo, kinda weakens it as a contender on the list of mech franchises when the focus is on infantry and tanks/crude walkers. As for the arbitrary limitation to western franchises that's just personal discretion.
If that's your outlook on mechs you should skip the Ostsol and get an Urbanmech instead!

Aye, though the MG urbie is a surprisingly valid "tryhard" mech with the max rating XL since the 360* torso twist and high mounted weapons make it surprisingly versatile.
Honestly the only mechs I currently have fitted that aren't "for funsies" are some of my assaults, and even then only because the effective build those mechs are running is pretty fun in and of itself.

Half artistic flair, half maybe a silly-huge version of a wire cutter like this https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe.....70205-01cr.jpg
Thanks! I'm always trying to shoot for "older" designs that relied more on just an interesting silhouette, or readable shapes / repeating shapes without giving into cramming things full of detail and shapes to the point of unreadable or just lost in a sea of generic homogeneous designs.
The foot is indeed cut - pretty much I sketched out the mech that's on the left, figured out about how horribly I could cram a person in there, decided it was too tall for my tastes and then quickly messed with the proportions on the one in the middle (hence the cut foot, I just grabbed it and made it larger haha).
