I went for a similar art style, as such, for continuity. Though, I feel the look may be a bit too whimsical for the subject matter... The look of this one was a bit conflicting to me ^^;

I really like the look of this picture. The style stands out to me a lot for some reason. I know you said in the last pic that you wanted a Water colored look, have you tried using layers with textures? I would recommend maybe doing a solid color and then lowering the layers opacity as well as change the texture. Sai is program I know that is good at this.
