From the day of their 14th birthday, every wolvenfolk, male or female, is expected to learn at least the fundamental principles of their hold's sword style. It matters little if their family cannot afford a sword - wooden practice swords are cheap to make, and if neccessary they can practice with a suitably-sized stick. While precious few in any generation ever achieve full mastery of a sword style, there are also precious few who would be totally inept were they called upon to pick up a sword and fight for their home. Wolvenfolk prize mastery of the sword above all other military disciplines other than mastery of the bow, and any practitioner of a regional sword style who can demonstrate their competency will never find himself lacking respect.
