Phew, need a break from this background. They often take more out of me then the characters do.

I used to feel that way, but I feel like I finally went past one of my walls and I've been enjoying backgrounds much more! A lot of the backgrounds I've done recently were added in for free since I seriously needed the practice and I really enjoyed it. (And it really helped me get better)
But it can also feels draining sometimes just due to how much goes into some of them before you even get to the characters. This one is heavy on inked in objects, so it's like working on the same thing for a longer time then usual. Nature backgrounds for me are usually a mix of inking and colour/painting, so I get to feel "refreshed" by doing a different type of art, if that makes sense.
I usually prefer to colour characters first, to make the background match more easily. But I think I might flat colour the background first so I have something different to do before more inking.

well that happens to me all the time... sometimes a drawing just can't have a background. even when the comission doesn't included one, i have to at least put some blurred things, color degrees and textures or at least sometexto or design around it.
but allways with a better result, adding something just for the sake of doing it (because why not) can be counterproducent (does this work even exist... i meant to say "contraproducente" (spanish)).

ooOO? is it free o.O does it work like grimp or more like Photoshop? there only programs i really used that arnt windows paint XD i know i know windows paint is bad but ironicallyi kinda use it well i gotta post my work i been working on for ages at some point from stage 1 to end lol shows how I made it from paint then to gimp then into what i am close to finishing up :P
It's not, but often goes on sale for 15$. It's sometimes called clip studio.
I don't use gimp, though I personally find gimp similar to photoshop. Manga studio is more of a mix between photoshop and SAI.
There's nothing wrong with paint! I personally hate it but it's not what I enjoy drawing in. Some artists are crazy amazing and use it. It's just like how crayola is cheap and limiting, but you can do amazing stuff with it. Just depends on if you want to or not.
