When we filmed Feed A Dragon, we cleared most of the animals from the area. We had to keep the dragon from getting distracted. One of the animals we didn't clear was a huge native species of turtle. These things were massive and we thought they were safe from the dragon's predatory apatite... How wrong we were. Apparently the shells are a great defence against predators... except when the predator is able to gulp you down whole. Two of these swam ashore and crawled up the beach, by the time the camera crew got the film running the first was gone, we did capture the fate of the second, biggest one though, what a voracious dragon! We had to wait for his stomach to process them before resuming filming x..x For the curious... no the shells did not survive the trip through the dragon intact.

This is just a short fun animation :P I am well aware the dragons skull would prevent him actually gulping down a turtle in this way. In the realistic way he would crunch the turtle before eating them like alligators do... Which I may as yet animate. (Only on my Mauros account, obviously.)
The Turtle is not my work, it came from here: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPrevi......cfm/ID/526993
The background plate is once again from: http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=18777
The floor tile is from: http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=40208
I used the font: http://www.1001fonts.com/shlop-font.html
Otherwise, everything here is my own work.

Nice animation, and actually, a jaws of a snake or lizard are designed to swallow prey whole that large and far larger, so I don't know why a reptilian-based dragon would have any difficulty. A keratin shell would be difficult to digest. Most objects made of this material, like claws, nails, scales and feather quills paws through the digestive system fully intact. Crocodilians frequently swallow whole turtles, but have s stone filled muscular stomach that help grind the shell down. The pieces help grind future food until they are worn away completely.
It's true that the jaws of snakes or lizards are flexible and well developed to swallow large prey, but in this case I think with his jaw structure as I picture it, it wouldn't be possible.
There is a bit of a choice when it comes to jaw structure of either flexibility, or bite force. This dragon has a powerful bite, which means the area the shell passed through, would intersect with his skull. The skull would be at this point for the masseter muscle to attach, and can't be made from cartilage as this would bend when he bit something. Some dragons may well be able to eat like this, but it doesn't quite fit with his anatomy.
His digestive system is somewhat a cross between crocodilian and avian. He has a circulatory shunt that allows him to quickly produce large amounts of very potent acids, as in crocodilians. However he also has a split stomach structure like birds. He has a proper stomach that produces acids (proventriculus) and a separate gizzard; lined with keratin-like teeth-structures, attached to a powerful muscular walls for grinding his prey. The shells would remain between his gizzard and proventriculus until they were smashed up into small enough pieces for him to pass. ^..^
Thanks for your thought out reply, I'm always interested to talk in detail, fix my ignorance and grow my understanding. :D
p.s.
I should add that his jaw structure actually takes inspiration from both reptile and canine anatomy.
I picture his jaw structure to be much more like a hyena than a monitor lizard, for example.
