She's doing what she thinks is best for her whole family. She wants gem to live with parents who love her. Her husband hates Gem for he sees her as the physical embodiment of a perceived affair. But he loves his other two children and they love him.
So its a toss up between, get rid of the father but in effect tear the family apart and take the boys away from their father
Or put Gem up for adoption where shes so young she wont remember anyone anyway and has a chance at being loved by both parents.

Though having read some more of it (Says something since I detest children and the babyfur thing usually) I think she'd be better off with the brother, rather than the guy that's so hateful toward someone who can hold no fault nor blame; to the point he'd not even stay for the other kids or even refer to the child as anything but 'it'.

Gem's poor mom. How heart wrenching, to be asked that question and then for Gem to go MAMA... I know she's doing what she thinks is the right thing, but she's right, if she hugged her she'd never be able to go through with it. I still hope that she gets another chance though. I really do.
