Dauntain is a chaotic creature. His knowledge of the occult has led him to live a very very long time and learn secrets both of the light and of the dark. Unfortunately, such secrets and long life can come at a cost and he is quite mad. If one were to sum up his personality it might be a combination of Disney’s Sher Kahn, Mr. Spock, Professor Moriarty, and the Cheshire Cat with a child’s playfulness. Although calm and cryptic, he can have quite nasty tantrums when he doesn’t get what he wants. His abode is usually under a Chinese Restaurant deep in China Town where he quietly reads and collects his books. Occasionally, an adventurer or villain will seek him out for forbidden knowledge or help. Dauntain of course, is more than willing to help for a Price although he may feign reluctance to assist. Although capable of powerful arcane contracts, he frequently offers fake contracts for a person’s soul signed in blood. (Typically for would be heroes) The contracts hold no power but it often amuses him to play the role of the devil and watch people do all in their power to avoid the phony consequences. His powers of illusion and shapechanging allow him to travel the surface world where he often poses as a small defenseless boy or girl as he walks among the most dangerous places. On purpose of course, as he delights on torturing would be predators with psychological terror created by illusion or by ripping out of whatever flesh disguise he might be wearing which can be quite disconcerting to any observer. Despite this, and even though his tentacle heads are equipped with sharp retractable cat claws, he rarely kills unless incredibly angered. After all, if the enemy is dead then Dauntain can’t have the fun of torturing him or her at a later date with a sadistic game when he gets bored. However, those kind of heart and respectful can also find him quite the gentleman. Care for a cup of tea?
