What amuses me is that pretty much all of Jack Benny's sponsors (Canada Dry, General Tire, Chevrolet, Jell-O, Grape Nuts, Lucky Strike, State Farm Insurance) are still around in one form or another (tho Lucky Strikes are only sold overseas nowadays)...

The first thing that popped into my head when I read that strip. [And yes I know the picture is of Sophia Loren and Jane Mansfield.]

January 1949: A personal friend of Harry S. Truman, Jack Benny served as Master of Ceremonies for Truman's Inaugural Ball. When he arrived at the White House for the event, a guard pointed to his violin case and asked, "Mr. Benny, what do you have in there?" As a joke, Jack whispered back, "It's a Thompson sub-machine gun." The guard replied, "Oh, that's a relief. I was afraid it was your violin".
