Well this took forever. Fairly happy with the result though! I've still got to work on design and compositional elements... my backgrounds tend to be a bit uninspired, but painting wise I'm more or less satisfied. I think it's pretty good, I hope you guy like it!

It's pretty common for backgrounds to be quite light in watercolour, since you can't paint light-on-dark like you can with some other mediums. For example: http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/.....364-110803.jpg
In fact, if you google 'watercolour forest' most examples do the same thing. That said, I definitely could have done some tricks to draw attention to the character a bit better, perhaps!

You're right! My mind was elsewhere when I saw your painting. Maybe there's a clearing past the background, like a meadow or a lake, hence the brightness. I'm used to seeing depictions of a character emerging from a dark forest, but I hadn't stopped to consider that your cute opossum could be venturing into a forest. Also, the brook you painted could lead anywhere. My bad.
When I think of forests, one of the first thoughts I conjure, is the image of a secluded copse or glade, and those are often depicted as warm, well-lit, and generally quite welcoming, while the surrounding forest dark and mysterious.
I'm also not too familiar with watercolor paintings. You're the first of very few artists I'm familiar with, who paints with water colors, however easily my favorite one. :3
I still love the picture though.

Why do you say this about such pretty things. :<
Good BG, good character, good outfit, good contrast, good placement (tail in the grass and all), good depth in the distance as detailed lines give way to shapes... quick kicking yourself in descriptions! He's a cutie and this piece is beautiful.
