If you're doing "realistic" eyes, it should be noted that most ungulates (cattle, pigs, deer, antelope, sheep, goats, camels, giraffes, hippos, equines, tapirs, and rhinos) have horizontal rectangular pupils, as do a few other species such as mongoose (mongooses? mongeese?), octopi, and some frogs and toads. On the other hand, foxes, felines and crocodiles have vertical slit pupils. In dim light, both horizontal and vertical pupils can become circular or nearly circular in almost all species.
