Umbra may look like an asshole, specially because he gets angry so easily, but he's actually kinda caring. And Alma gets to see that side of him quite often. That made enduring the abuse he goes through so much easier.
Also, unlike Umbra, Alma is rarely ever chained down. He tried to escape once, but it didn't go so well, and his attempt actually got him caged for a whole week and the whole house (from the nobles to the servants) were allowed into his cage anytime to do whatever they pleased to him. After that, just the word "escape" makes him tremble in fear. That makes Umbra's plan of running away so much more difficult...
