<<A Devil in Disguise | Better the Devil you know | Heartless Angel>>
A short story I wrote during my Short Story Saturday stream I did alongside
RockyTheProcy's Free Sketch Friday stream (3/5/16). This story was won by
voreboy, and through it we explore to depths that is TMNT 2003's Leatherhead, who is a lonely soul who takes ten mile long guilt trips. So when a rather unsuspecting individual comes along, could it be possible that he might not be the monster he thinks he is?

A Devil in Disguise
Ugh, it was always so tedious when one needs to avoid those wretched human authorities, especially in the sewers. Not that they were chasing due to a crime or anything; no, not at all. It was just, well, how does one put it? Perhaps a mirror in an abandoned subway bathroom would help? Wiping away the dirt and dust of ages, a handsome man with pale skin stared back from the dirty mirror. Dressed in a fanciful, albeit old-timey black suit with a conflicting white fedora adorned with a red feather held by the black band of the hat. Now, while that look would get you a few stares, it was largely one’s acid-green eyes and spiky blood-red hair that tended to make people a bit unsettled. While it flowed like the finest wine, one can’t help the two spikey bangs that did give one some rather unusual, err, demonic features. It was as if Beelzebub himself was staring into your soul. So, yeah, a bit awkward when dealing with humans… okay, using the term “human” probably didn’t help. Either way, a dapperly dressed individual was doing his best to avoid some rather probing questions from men dressed in black, hence the sewer.
Stepping out into fresh… well, open air in any case, the keen senses of this fellow picked up the sound of, hmmm, typing. Was someone down here with a computer? Following the sound, the figure’s silent feet took him to a stony chamber, filled with basic amenities including a bed, food supply, and a seven foot tall humanoid crocodile. A curt brow was raised at that, namely because it was wearing a lab coat and mumbling to himself. He sounded rather frustrated, and his temper was only increasing with his mumbling. “ARGH!”
The figure jumped back in alarm as the crocodile punched a crater into a nearby wall. “DAMN IT ALL!” the crocodile complained loudly, before settling back in his seat. “I was certain this time, confound it all!”
“Umm, hello?” the figure uttered.
“EEEK!” the crocodile shrieked loudly, swinging around on his chair in alarm. He was breathing heavily, and the figure immediately noticed that the creature was certainly well-stacked where it counted. The croc’s scales creaked from the strain of his heavy breaths, but he calmed down respectably swiftly. “Who are you?!” he demanded sternly.
“Oh, umm, I’m sorry for just barging in. I’m uhh, kinda lost in here, and I heard you typing, so I just came around to ask for directions” the figure rambled. It wasn’t necessarily a lie, but it wasn’t necessarily true either.
“Very well. Now who are you?” the croc demanded.
“Oh… OH! I’m Jacob, and you are?” Jacob inquired.
“Nobody” the croc grunted stiffly.
“Come now, I offered you mine, so you can at least answer with yours” Jacob sternly reprimanded the croc.
“Leatherhead” the croc grunted as he returned to his work.
Leatherhead, original and apt for a scaly reptile. “So, Mister Leatherhead, what exactly are you doing here?” Jacob inquired curiously.
“Nothing that concerns you. Now weren’t you trying to find your way out of here? If so, just use the stairs to get out” Leatherhead grumbled, his body hunched over his computer.
“Thank you. So, umm, you’re a seven foot crocodile” Jacob began gingerly. “So, err, how is that a thing?”
“You ask too many questions for a human” Leatherhead snapped, before realizing something. “Wait, why aren’t you fleeing from me in terror? Screaming that I’m a monster and the like?” he demanded.
“Well, I have seen my fair share of strangeness, it is simply something I’m used to. Do people call you a monster?” Jacob questioned curiously.
“That answer is fairly obvious” Leatherhead bitterly answered.
“True, so, what are you doing down here anyways? You seem like a scientist, so, did you accidentally turn yourself into a crocodile?” Jacob pressed.
“That is none of your concern” Leatherhead answered snippily.
“Alright, so you didn’t do it to yourself. You seem kinda lonely though, does everyone run from you?” Jacob pressed.
“ENOUGH!” Leatherhead roared, slamming his desk hard enough to send cracks through it.
Jacob was quite taken aback by the beast’s rage, the reason for his isolation suddenly all the more apparent. His heart was starting to beat, but, was it from fear? He was never usually afraid, so, what was this feeling? Respect, intrigue? The latter seemed likely, he was quite interesting, at least, more so than the humans of this world. “I apologize if I’ve offended you, I’m just interested is all. I’ve never seen a humanoid crocodile before, so you’ll forgive me for being so inquisitive’ Jacob politely explained.
Leatherhead sighed, his anger abating as he swivelled his chair to turn his back on the human. “There’s nothing to learn from me. I’d… I’d just rather be alone” he bitterly answered.
“Come now,” Jacob said, trying to sound as sympathetic as he could, “you are the sort who shouldn’t be alone.”
“And how do you know that?” Leatherhead scowled at the wall.
“Well, you sound like you could use a talk. Well, I’m free and not screaming at you. So, why do you feel you should be alone?” Jacob requested.
Spinning back around, Leatherhead sat slumped in his chair, his keen eyes summing up the unsuspecting human. “You really want to know?” he questioned. Jacob nodded eagerly. Sighing loudly, the croc leaned forward, hands in his lap. “Very well. I’ve spent much of my life being used and tinkered around by people” he bitterly explained. “I’ve been experimented on by a human to the point of insanity, and the scars run deep. I can’t live with anyone around, my anger and rage cannot allow it. Do you know what that’s like? To be afraid that you will not be able to control yourself? To allow your primal rage to break free and hurt everything around you? To know that you could only see red, and kill those you care about? I was terrified when I had thought I had ended the life of a good friend. I was relieved to learn that I had not, but I possess the potential to do so. I’m terrified. Terrified at the idea that I could kill someone. THAT is why I remain alone” he concluded with a bitter tear.
Jacob breathed slowly, so slowly a normal human would pass out from oxygen deficiency. This was rather new really; new, and somewhat surprising. Sufficed to say, the crocodile wasn’t the only one with a history of experimentation. Humans were an inquisitive bunch, but they had a dreadful habit of prying where they were not supposed to trespass. Empathy, sincere empathy. That was a rather new feeling, to be quite honest. It almost brought a tear- No wait, it brought a tear to Jacob’s eyes. Supressing a sniffle, he wiped away the offending tear before the croc caught sight of it. “That… that is something I never would have expected,” he admitted, “nor something that would speak to me so deeply.”
“Come again?” Leatherhead uttered in bemusement.
Smiling wryly, Jacob sat on what he presumed was Leatherhead’s bed, his head tilted to hide his eyes beneath his hat. “I must confess, I never really considered you as the monster you see yourself as. I felt you may have some rage issues, but you don’t appear as the murderous monster you think you might be. If anything, all I see is a nice and gentle person with a few issues” he summarized succinctly.
“And you think that from speaking with me for five minutes?” Leatherhead questioned blithely.
“Well, I consider myself a good judge of character, and my ruling is that you aren’t a monster” Jacob explained.
“People would be to differ” Leatherhead spat irritably.
The edges of Jacob’s lips twitched, and his eyes flickered for a brief moment. “I don’t think humans get to decide that. If I can make an educated guess, the ones who “tinkered” on you were human. So, I ask what right they have to call you a monster when they’re monstrous enough to experiment on a living creature out of curiosity!” he furiously demanded.
“I…, hmmm” Leatherhead muttered inaudibly.
Jacob sighed, his mind at work to cool his own temper down. “I just want to say, I know how you feel Leatherhead. People haven’t treated me with the level of respect I deserve as a basic right” he informed the reptile with a frown.
One of the most unique things in the world is finding someone who has gone through a similar horrible experience you have, and as a result, you understand precisely how they feel. This crocodile, this reptile, this person sitting before Jacob… was someone he had wanted to meet for some time. Someone he could relate to, someone he could understand, someone he could… feel for. He had to laugh at the fact that he would find it with the unlikeliest of sources. “Unbelievable” he chuckled to himself.
“What is?” Leatherhead questioned.
“Do… you believe at love at first sight?” Jacob inquired.
“There is some merit to it, though I haven’t seen it myself” Leatherhead shrugged, before becoming very surprised as the human he had been talking to was quite suddenly in front of him, their hands on his chair armrests, and staring into his eyes.
Jacob was breathing heavily, his heart beating so fast. “Well, as strange as it is to say, I must say, I’m starting to believe it myself” he wheezed.
Gripping Leatherhead’s scaly cheeks in his hands, and he kissed that fine scaly muzzle. “MMPH!” Leatherhead mutely groaned.
This was a first, to be honest. The human had a fine grip on him, and was quite adamant in not letting him go. Really, the surprise alone prevented him from acting until the human was done kissing. “Oh… my…” Leatherhead uttered in surprise.
Jacob smiled, chuckling nervously as he pulled back. “I… I apologize for that. I’m not always so very presumptive, but, well, I can say that you’re the first to ever capture my heart” he blushed.
“I, oh, my, what?” Leatherhead stammered.
“Well, you are quite the kindred spirit, and, I know how you feel, I do. If I may, could I perhaps spend some more time with you?” Jacob requested.
“….”
“I would understand, if you don’t.”
“It’s not that, I am just… surprised by your proposition,” Leatherhead began, “as, well, you are male, and I am male. It’s not something I’m used to.”
“Then, allow me to introduce you to the concept” Jacob smiled with a devious air.
“What did you have in mind?” Leatherhead inquired.
Jacob didn’t answer, he only smiled.
